DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: DISTANT PAST (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. Carlos believes he and Gabrielle should go to the police about Victor, but Gabrielle refuses. Unbeknownst to them, Victor has washed ashore and is still alive. Mike continues to keep his painkiller addiction secret from Susan. Susan watches as Julie comes home from her date with her new boyfriend Derek and tries to prevent her from kissing him, as she is disgusted by his various body piercings. Bree insists that Benjamin sleep in the same bed as her and Orson, much to his disappointment. Lynette is concerned about her mother and calls around to determine her whereabouts. Tom tries to get her not to worry and Lynette leaves the matter alone, but Lynette does not listen. Gabrielle is questioned by the police about Victor’s disappearance, and she attempts to persuade them that he committed suicide in response to her threatening to leave him. However, the police do not believe her since there were no fingerprints found on his boat, leading them to suspect a deliberate murder took place. Barrett, Mike’s drug supplier, comes around looking for him but encounters Susan instead. He does not reveal his relationship to Mike, claiming he is a pre-med student. Orson’s work begins to suffer due to Bree’s “family bonding” attempts, and he asks that Benjamin be put in a crib, but Bree refuses and they argue about it before Orson decides to sleep on the couch that night. Susan tries to set Barrett up with Julie, believing him to be far more respectable than Derek. He leaves to carry out another drug deal, and Susan invites him back the following day. Bree visits Tom and asks him for advice about any sexual problems he and Lynette may have experienced while their children were growing up, and he explains that they were forced to “get creative,” i.e. have sex in other locations such as the office or their car. Mike is over at Adam’s house fixing his sink when Sylvia, whom he describes as a n ex-patient with mental issues, arrives to try to speak to him, but Adam gets her to leave with Mike’s help. He asks Mike not to tell Katherine that Sylvia was there. Mike asks Adam for a prescription for his shoulder pain, but Adam is unable to help him. Bree takes Tom’s advice and attempts to seduce Orson at his dentist office. Lynette returns home to find her stepfather Glen waiting for her, much to her surprise. She is overjoyed to see him after thirty years. He explains that Stella called him asking for money, and asks Lynette to come with her for their meeting the following day; he reveals that Stella broke into a car and spent the night there. Adam visits Orson about getting a prescription for Mike, but Orson cannot help him either, citing ethical issues. However, Adam reminds him that he delivered Danielle’s baby and thus knows their secrets. Andrew moves out to a low-rent apartment, feeling as though Bree desires a “fresh start” from her earlier misdeeds, and believing he is unwanted in her house. Orson caves in and gives Mike his prescription, although he has reservations about doing so. Mike expresses dissatisfaction with his new suburban lifestyle and maintains that he cannot get physical therapy as he needs to keep working. Mike mentions the hit and run which gave him his initial shoulder pain and reveals that he still doesn’t know the identity of the driver. Susan mentions to Mike that Barrett was looking for him and Mike calls him, assuring him that he will be paid and warning him never to come to his house again. Edie reads about the mayor’s disappearance and makes an anonymous tip to the police, informing them that he may be dead. Carlos again urges Gabrielle to give herself up to the police alongside him, believing it will only be a matter of time before the police discover their involvement. Gabrielle seemingly agrees, but prevents Carlos from going to the police by serving him tequila laced with sedatives. Susan has Barrett over the next day and gets him talking to Julie; they seem to hit it off. Mike returns home to find Barrett in his house and talks to him in private. He gives him the money he owes him and finds out that he and Julie are going out together. Mike forbids Barrett from seeing Julie, but Barrett threatens to reveal that he is a drug addict if he tries to interfere. Despite this, Mike outs Barrett as a drug dealer in front of Susan, who immediately throws him out. As Carlos falls asleep the police arrive at Gabrielle’s house again, and they reveal that they have knowledge of her affair with Carlos. She tries to allay their suspicions while concealing Carlos’s presence. One of the detectives receives a call informing him that the police have located Victor on the beach, unconscious but stable. She accompanies them to the hospital to see him. Lynette and Glen arrive to meet Stella, and Glen expresses regret for leaving his family thirty years ago when Stella cheated on him. Stella arrives and Glen goes out to see her. Susan fully explains the situation behind Mike’s painkiller addiction to Julie. Susan insists that Mike is clean now, but Julie tells her that she saw Mike picking up his prescription from the drugstore that morning. Glen gives Stella the money he promised, but she becomes enraged when she sees that Lynette has accompanied him. Lynette prevents her from leaving and apologizes for her conversation with her sisters, but soon argues with her mother; she is still resentful for the mistakes Stella made in her childhood but Stella says it was in the past and she should simply get over it. Suddenly Glen reveals that the real reason he left the family was because he is gay, much to Lynette’s shock. Bree visits Andrew at his new apartment and asks him to come back home, disgusted with his ratty new apartment. Andrew insists that he can live on his own, explaining that he’s mad at her because she didn’t seem to appreciate how he changed and matured from the troublemaking kid he used to be. Bree admits that she didn’t make her appreciation clear due to the changes in her own life, such as with Orson and Benjamin. Bree doesn’t want to part on bad terms with Andrew, and Andrew thanks Bree for helping him to turn his life around and become more adult. Glen tells Lynette about the life he had with his partner after leaving Stella, who recently died. Stella admits that she didn’t tell Lynette about it because she felt “ashamed” that she had somehow failed in her marital duties. Lynette notes that if Stella had told her, she would have understood and forgiven Stella’s behavior over the years. She begs Stella to come home and live with her again, admitting that she enjoyed having her around for the past few months. Stella declines, believing that she would interfere too greatly in Lynette’s life. Glen suggests that Stella could stay in his guest room, and she accepts. Susan spies on Mike as he tries to surreptitiously take more pills. Gabrielle arrives at the hospital to see Victor and discovers that he has amnesia about the past week, much to Gabrielle’s relief. However, once the police are out of the room he reveals to her that he is feigning his amnesia and implies that when he recovers he will attempt to kill her again. Sylvia continues to stalk Adam. Susan discovers that it was Orson who approved Mike’s prescription. Includes commercials.
