GREY'S ANATOMY: FOREVER YOUNG (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Meredith observes Derek and Sydney Heron on what appears to be a date, and George admits to Meredith that things are going badly in his new romance with Izzie. Callie reluctantly congratulates Bailey, who has succeeded her as chief resident, and Bailey sternly tells her residents to "grow up" and behave themselves, though Izzie is distracted by her problems with George. Cristina aggressively pursues Hahn's tutelage and when a group of high school students injured in a bus crash is brought into the ER, Bailey is surprised to encounter an old high school friend, Marcus. She seems smitten by him, though George soon observes that he has a heart condition. Derek treats a boy, Danny, with a pencil jammed into his eye, while Callie and Mark work on a bratty cheerleader, Tricia, with injuries to her face and coccyx. Alex then finds that a drunk Thatcher is making a scene in the ER, demanding to see Meredith, but Webber advises him to find Lexie instead.

Marcus asks Bailey to assist him with his hospital paperwork, though Hahn rudely observes that Bailey should have noticed his atrial fibrillation sooner. Alex is forced to call on Meredith when Lexie refuses to deal with her father, and Thatcher apologizes for their fight and sadly explains that it is his late wife Susan's birthday. George questions Bailey about her relationship with Marcus, and she reveals that she was formerly his "tutor," though hints that she had hoped for something more. Mark's ego is deflated when a few of the high school girls remind him of his age, and Cristina complains to Meredith about Hahn's dismissive treatment of her. Tricia is upset when her "friends" seem prepared to replace her on the cheerleading squad, and Danny's best friend Marissa bids him a sweet goodbye as he heads into the OR to have the pencil removed. During his surgery, Nurse Rose remarks to Derek that Seattle Grace is as "cliquey" as a high school, but Danny takes a turn for the worse and Derek realizes that he must tell Marissa that her best friend is not going to wake up. Mark publicly comments on George and Izzie's problems during Tricia's surgery, and Callie observes that Cristina is being a "brownnoser" and annoying Hahn.

Thatcher rambles to Meredith about his pride in her, apparently determined to make up for lost time, and Meredith admits to Derek that she prefers her charming, drunk father to her sober one. Izzie is angered to hear the interns gossiping about her apparent break-up and learns from George that they both confided in Meredith separately. Hahn and "lovestruck teenager" Bailey soon rush Marcus to surgery, though Cristina is distressed to be excluded from the procedure. Derek finally breaks the bad news to Marissa and Izzie attempts to comfort her, revealing that she herself was not a "prom queen" but an outcast who fell pregnant at a young age. Callie bonds with Tricia, explaining that she too was fired from her "squad" but now views it as a blessing. Cristina is relieved when Hahn summons her after all, and Lexie angrily reveals to Meredith that it is not her mother's birthday at all and that their father is often loving one moment and vicious the next while drunk. George overhears Marcus again asking Bailey to do his "homework" for him, and he urges her to stand up for herself. Alex tells Lexie that he too spent years dealing with an alcoholic father, and Bailey delivers her trademark "long speech" to Derek instead, tearfully realizing that Marcus still does not "see" her despite her success. George and Izzie admit that they miss their formerly close friendship, and Derek talks with Rose, who reveals that they worked together on thirty-six surgeries before he truly noticed her. At Joe's Bar, Sydney informs Derek that he is "not ready" to handle her as a girlfriend and, amused, he leaves with Meredith, though takes note of Rose on the way out.
