PUSHING DAISIES: BITCHES (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. In this episode, in a flashback, young Ned plays with his toys at night at boarding school, but his imagination fails him. Elsewhere, young Chuck thinks of him as well. In the present, Chuck and Ned wake up in their separate beds. Chuck slips and falls onto Ned upon getting out of bed, but is somehow not dead (again), and they immediately kiss. Chuck, however, then reveals herself to be Olive in a Chuck suit and kisses Ned again, at which point he awakens from his odd dream. At the Pie Hole, he seeks Emerson’s advice, but he dismisses the dream as meaningless. Olive and Chuck discuss Olive’s real-life kiss with Ned, from when he saved her from a murderous horse jockey, and Olive untruthfully says it meant nothing. She is appalled when Chuck confirms that she and Ned never touch because of an “allergy” and says it is “tragic.” They are then distracted by a new case: one Harold Hundin, a dog breeder, was stabbed multiple times in his office. Emerson bribes the coroner and Ned revives Harold, who says that he was actually poisoned first, causing him to fall on a pointy dog hair brush. He says he was given cyanide-laced coffee by his wife, and Emerson is pleased with the conciseness of the case—but then finds that Harold had four wives. Emerson reluctantly recruits Olive’s help, and the two of them plus Ned and Chuck investigate each of Harold’s four widows, all of whom are dog lovers as well, using Digby as a decoy. They learn that Harold’s prize dog, a “colladorussellapoo” hybrid named Bubblegum, died recently when wife #3, Simone, accidentally ran over her. All four wives cop to giving Harold his morning coffee, but when they all arrive at the Pie Hole to confront the investigators, it is Hallie, the newest and sweetest wife, who admits she used the almond-flavored creamer that killed Harold, and she is arrested.
Chuck doubts Hallie’s guilt, and Emerson is soon hired to free her. Hallie says none of her sister-wives could’ve killed Harold, and accuses a Ramsfeld Snuppy, a corporate dog breeder who coveted Bubblegum. When they talk to Snuppy, however, he states that before his death, Harold signed a contract giving him Bubblegum, dead or alive, and says he will clone the prize dog from its remains, giving him no reason to kill Harold. Ned and Chuck also debate the merits of polygamy, with Chuck agreeing that perhaps one cannot get everything from just one person. Emerson talks to Simone again, suggesting that Harold’s plans to sell Bubblegum served as her motive to kill him, but she too accuses Snuppy, stating that she and the other wives were putting a stop to the sale of Bubblegum. However, Emerson later remembers in a dream he noticed Bubblegum’s collar in different places, and also realizes that he is falling for Simone. At the same time, Olive reveals to Hillary, wife #1, that Snuppy plans to clone Bubblegum from her remains. Emerson confronts Simone and says that he knows Bubblegum is alive, at which point she chloroforms and ties him up, believing that he works for Snuppy. He manages to escape, however, and he and Ned soon find Snuppy dead.
Emerson is reluctant to suspect Simone, despite the evidence, so they devise a plan: with Olive and Chuck’s help, they bring Snuppy’s body to Harold’s funeral. Just as the wives file past them, Ned revives Snuppy, and Hillary flees in shock at the sight of him, revealing herself to be the killer. Ned chases her and tackles her to the ground, and the truth is revealed: she killed Harold to prevent him selling Bubblegum and framed Hallie for it. When she learned from Olive that Snuppy planned to clone Bubblegum’s remains, she killed him too to preserve her dog’s uniqueness, as she herself resented not being Harold’s “unique” wife. Simone, in turn, faked Bubblegum’s death to save her from Snuppy as well. She and Emerson talk, and sparks fly between them again. Ned apologizes to Olive for their post-kiss awkwardness, and she assures him that she just wants him to be happy, but cannot help holding onto hope for their future together. Ned then tells Chuck that despite their obvious relationship limitations, polygamy is not for him and she is the only one he wants. Includes commercials.
