DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: SECRETS & LIES {SPECIAL} (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife.
This behind-the-scenes special profiles the main characters and recaps their antics through the show's first three seasons. Narrator Mary Alice opens by discussing her friends' close bonds with one another and their many personal ups and downs. The first segment explores Susan Mayer, including her romance with Mike; his six-month coma and amnesia; his relationship with Edie, who lied to him about his past with Susan; her engagement to Ian Hainsworth and her sense of confusion over her two suitors; and her eventual happy wedding to Mike.
The second segment focuses on Bree van de Kamp and the death of her husband Rex; her struggles with her troublemaking children Andrew and Danielle; her decision to check herself into a mental hospital; her second marriage and sex life with Orson Hodge; her discovery of Andrew's seedy secret life; Danielle's unexpected pregnancy; and her decision to fake a pregnancy of her own and pass her unborn grandchild off as her own son.
Next, Lynette Scavo's story is explored, including her husband Tom's harebrained decision to open a pizza parlor; their disagreements about who is "in charge" at home and at work; Tom's ruptured disc and her feelings of temptation toward replacement employee Rick; and her recent cancer diagnosis.
The fourth segment profiles Gabrielle Solis, including her distant relationship with husband Carlos and affair with teenage gardener John; her anger at discovering Carlos' revenge affair with would-be surrogate Xiao-Mei; their eventual breakup; and her romance and recent wedding to local politician Victor Lang.
Finally, the program tells the tale of Edie Britt and her many male "conquests"; her relationship with Carlos after his split from Gabrielle; Gabrielle's outrage at her friends' refusal to snub Edie for her "betrayal"; Carlos' anger at discovering that Edie is still using birth control despite her claims of wanting to have a child with him; Gabrielle and Carlos' secret hook-up on Gabrielle's wedding day after she overhears Victor making heartless comments about her; and Edie's apparent decision to take her life in despair over Carlos. Includes commercials and promos.
