DIRTY SEXY MONEY: THE NUTCRACKER {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The first season finale in this drama series about a troubled lawyer whose life is overtaken by his employers: a super-rich, morally-challenged family in New York City. In this episode, Sofia, still believing that Jeremy is an impoverished artist, asks him to paint her, and Ellen and Patrick renew their passion, having moved past the shooting incident, though Carmelita soon calls and states that she is being followed. Simon summons Nick to his office to discuss a "delicate matter," and then asks Karen, with whom he is in bed, to meet a certain visiting friend of his. Tripp visits Brian, who is still angry about the revelation about his true parentage, but Tripp that he regards him affectionately as the son of his beloved best friend. The bishop then suspends Brian, however, listing his recent misdeeds and suggesting that he do some soul-searching about his true calling. Simon tells Nick that the Darlings are "in the way" of his grand plans for New York and asks him to procure their financial papers about their profits and holdings, though Nick points out that doing so would be a significant betrayal. Simon then acknowledges that he is dating Karen and asks if it will be a problem, as she is Nick's ex, but he seems unbothered.
The Darlings discuss their feelings about Brian and his new half-brother status, and Juliet is thrilled when her friend Kai arrives from the Seychelles for a two-week visit. Brian tells his mother about his series of setbacks, and she assures him that he is an excellent reverend, though when he admits that he has always questioned his faith and his true connection with God, she urges him to discuss the matter with his "father." Jeremy visits Lisa's art gallery in search of paintings to pass off as his own for Sofia, and he observes a large installment in the shape of a sponge. Nick tells Tripp about Simon's request, and Tripp decides to give him a slightly doctored version of their financials. Karen later delivers the papers to Nick, though he declines to explain what they are for, and she is surprised when he reveals that he knows of the affair with Simon but promises not to tell Tripp. Carmelita tells Patrick that she is sure that someone has been in her home, and he promises to send someone to protect her, though admits that he cannot use the police. Tripp observes that Brian's field is that of "ideas" rather than of wealth and business and urges him to stick with the church, and Lisa tells Jeremy that Robert refuses to turn over any works-in-progress, prompting Jeremy to try his own hand at sketching with Lisa as his model.
Karen is stunned to meet Simon's glamorous ex-wife, Princess Ama of Ghana, who grandly states that she "approves" of his relationship with her. Clark the chauffeur plants a camera in Carmelita's apartment and promises to sit outside all night to protect her, and Jeremy and Lisa share some marijuana as she encourages him to "be himself" with Sofia. She grows suddenly emotional as she realizes that she is "losing" Nick to the Darlings and their many demands, though she rebuffs Jeremy's attempt to kiss her. Nick takes Kiki to the Darlings' annual production of "The Nutcracker" and observes that Karen is distraught, and in the morning, Lisa is abruptly fired when the wealthy buyer of the sponge sculpture refuses to pay for it, stating that it smells of pot. Patrick finds that Carmelita has vanished with the unknown assailant despite Clark's careful surveillance, and Brian explains that he prayed over his dilemma and came to the conclusion that he should work for Tripp in the family business. Nick delivers the financial information to Simon as promised but sternly orders him to stay away from Karen after all, and Jeremy takes Lisa's advice and confesses the truth to Sofia, admitting that he is one of the billionaire Darlings. She takes offense to his lie, however, and leaves. Kai declares that he wants to stay in America "indefinitely," assuring Juliet that his uncle has accepted his choice, and Juliet asks him to be her "first." Lisa tells Nick about being fired, and he reassures her and then suggests that they should have another kid, which deeply relieves her. Finally, Karen and Tripp discuss Simon, revealing that Karen is "dating" him directly on her father's orders, though Tripp questions if she is beginning to genuinely fall for him.
