GREY'S ANATOMY: DIDN'T WE ALMOST HAVE IT ALL? {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The third season finale in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Adele Webber and Rina are both rushed into the hospital with pregnancy complications, while elsewhere Meredith informs Cristina that she "needs" to go through with her wedding to prove that deeply flawed people like themselves can find happy endings. Derek tells the other three climbers that Lonnie has been found alive, and they tell him that he was accidentally struck in the head with the axe while panicking during their ascent. Addison gently tells Richard that Adele is pregnant, presumably with another man's child, and Cristina is unhappy when Bailey "generously" sends her home to prepare for her wedding, rather than letting her scrub in on Rina's aortic dissection. Alex is saddened when Jeff Pope turns up in search of his wife Rebecca, a.k.a. "Ava," and Meredith is taken aback when Derek informs her that "she should be worried" about his flirtation with the mysterious woman at Joe's the previous night.
Richard meets with Sloan, Addison and Burke, telling each one why they're not his pick for the next new chief, and George is flustered when Callie abruptly tells him that she very much wants to have a baby with him. Meredith is uncomfortable when Adele recalls Richard's long-ago "flirtation" with Ellis, and Jane gives Cristina an heirloom choker necklace to wear at the ceremony, admitting that she "misjudged her" before. Izzie declares that "vows are vows" when Alex suggests that Rebecca may leave her husband, and Addison hastily delivers Rina's twins as Derek and George work on Lonnie and realize that the axe definitely didn't get into his head accidentally. At Addison and Izzie's prompting, Burke rehearses his wedding vows, in which he declares himself not hopeful but "sure" of his future with Cristina, and George tells Callie that he's on board with the baby plan. Alex demands to know why Jeff didn't search for his missing wife after the ferry crash, and Jeff admits that he believed that his wife had simply left him, as they'd been unhappy together for some time.
Derek decides to call the cops when the climbers stick to their implausible story, and Meredith, alarmed to find that the overbearing Mama Burke has "taken" Cristina's eyebrows, begs Bailey to let her surgery-obsessed bestie perform just one "cut" to make her feel like herself again. Adele suffers a miscarriage despite Addison's best efforts, and Richard is heartbroken to learn that the baby, a boy, was actually his. Izzie, apparently moved by Burke's words, informs a stunned George that she is "sure" that she's in love with him, though adds that she will step aside and support his marriage if he wishes to remain with Callie. One of the climbers, Andy, retains a lawyer and then finally admits that he tried to put Lonnie "out of his misery" when he believed his friends to be dying painfully, and the interns receive their exam results as they scramble to prepare for the wedding. Rebecca is officially discharged, and though she begs Alex to "give her a reason to stay" and start a new life as Ava, he sadly tells her to stick with "the decent guy," Jeff.
Meredith confronts Derek, who informs her that she's the love of his life and should just "put him out of his misery" if she doesn't truly wish to commit to him, and at the church, Meredith and Cristina's mother encourage the nervous bride to go ahead with the ceremony. Alex flirts with Addison, though she tells him to pursue Ava instead, and back at Seattle Grace, George reveals that he failed his exams, telling Bailey that he can't face the indignity of starting all over as an intern. Izzie tries to hide her shock when Callie casually reveals that she and George are now "trying," and though Cristina panics that she scrubbed her carefully written vows off her hand, Meredith gives her a stern "pep talk" to get her going. Burke, however, finally realizes that he has been pressuring his fiancée into something she doesn't want and loves only "the woman he hopes she'll become," and calls off the wedding. Meredith is forced to tell the guests, particularly Derek, that it's "so over," and Alex rushes back to the hospital to find that Rebecca has indeed departed. At home, Cristina realizes that Burke has taken his essential belongings and left her for good, and she breaks down in frantic tears in Meredith's arms as she realizes that she's "free."
George cleans out his locker and encounters the new crop of surgical interns, including Derek's flirty pal from the other night – Lexie Grey, Meredith's half-sister. Richard informs Derek that he has been selected as chief, but Derek tells him to stay in the position himself and start things anew. Includes commercials and promos.
