LOST: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. This is an “enhanced” episode with on-screen text that gives various explanations and clues about plot elements. In this episode, off the island, a bearded Jack sits on a plane, drinking. The plane experiences brief turbulence, but it quickly stops. He notices an obituary in a newspaper and seems to be upset by it, tearing it out and keeping it. Once on the ground, he calls someone but declines to leave a message, breaking down in tears. He drives over a bridge and gets out, climbing onto the ledge and whispering “forgive me.” Before he can jump, however, a car crashes nearby, and he runs to pull the victims from the wreckage, much as he did on his first day on the island.

On the island, the survivors prepare to leave the beach, as Juliet and Karl have told them that the Others are coming to attack them and kidnap their pregnant women, including Sun, for experimentation. Sayid, who is staying behind to fight the Others with Bernard and Jin, tells Jack to keep heading for the radio tower no matter what in the hopes of getting everyone rescued. Rose and Bernard say their goodbyes, as do Sun and Jin, with Jin telling his wife in halted English that they “have to go home.” As they begin their trek, the parachutist, Naomi, pulls Jack aside and teaches him how to use the satellite phone which will, if Charlie manages to un-jam the radio signal, allow her to call her boat and rescue everyone. Down at the underwater Looking Glass station, Charlie is being beaten up by Greta and Bonnie, who demand to know why he is there. He smugly tells them that Juliet betrayed them, and they hurry to call Ben. Charlie watches them enter a communication room on the side and, remembering Desmond’s description of his vision, realizes that this is where he will save his friends and then die. Greta and Bonnie get through to Ben, who is disturbed to hear what Juliet has done, and immediately sends Mikhail off to the Looking Glass. Guessing that Juliet may have laid another trap, Ben hurriedly calls Ryan, who is with Tom Friendly and the others at the camp, but their radios are off. Noting the white marks on the tents that supposedly signify where the pregnant women are located, the Others sneak up on the camp, only to discover that the tents are really filled with piles of dynamite from the Black Rock, which are then detonated by Sayid and Bernard’s shots, killing seven Others. Bernard’s shot fails, though, and the three men are captured by the remaining Others. The other survivors, only hearing two of the three explosions, begin to panic, but Jack reassures them that the plan will still succeed.

Off the island, Jack is at the hospital and inquires after the woman he rescued. He is surprised by the arrival of his ex-wife Sarah, whom he met under very similar circumstances and who is now remarried and pregnant. She asks if he has been drinking “again,” but he denies it. Later, Jack pops some pills before he meets another doctor, Hamill, at the hospital, who says he is a hero “twice over” but refuses to allow him to operate on the car-crash woman. In the Looking Glass, Charlie confidently explains his plan to Bonnie and Greta and seems unconcerned that he does not yet know the code to turn off the jamming equipment, adding that the station will soon flood and he will die. Elsewhere, Ben is furious at the survivors’ trick and orders the Others on the beach to kill Jin. Jin bravely orders Bernard and Sayid not to talk, but Bernard gives in, admitting that the survivors are headed to the radio tower on Juliet and Karl’s information, and Ben says to wait to kill them. He then orders Richard and the others to go to the Temple while he goes to the radio tower to “talk them out of” leaving, and Alex tags along. In the jungle, Kate confronts Sawyer, who is still brooding over his murder of Anthony Cooper, a.k.a. “Tom Sawyer,” and she tells him that there is a chance she too is pregnant. Sawyer then tells Jack he is going back to the beach to check on their friends, and Juliet offers to come along, but not before giving Jack a goodbye kiss, spotted by Kate.

Desmond, whom Charlie knocked out to protect him, awakens on the canoe and immediately takes fire from Mikhail, so he dives underwater and surfaces in the Looking Glass. Charlie tells him to hide, and Mikhail soon arrives, but Charlie claims to be alone. Mikhail is surprised to find that Ben lied and said the station was already flooded and inoperable, but when he confronts Ben over the walkie-talkie, Ben claims that he “did it for the island,” which is now under attack, and pleads with Mikhail to trust him as well as the enigmatic Jacob. He then asks Mikhail to kill Charlie as well as Greta and Bonnie, as they know the code to the jamming equipment. Sawyer and Juliet banter as they head back to the beach, and are surprised by Hurley, who wants to help, but Sawyer unkindly rebuffs him. Elsewhere, Ben and Alex head towards the survivors, and Ben says that Alex betrayed him by telling Karl their plans, and adds that he did not want Karl to get Alex pregnant, as pregnant women routinely die on the island.

Locke, who was previously shot by Ben, awakens in the open grave containing the victims of Ben’s Purge and finds that he is paralyzed once again. Seeing the gun nearby, he picks it up and seems close to ending his life when he suddenly hears the mysterious whispers and sees a vision of a strangely older-looking Walt on the edge of the pit, who tells him to get up because he has “work to do.” As they walk, Jack talks to Kate and confesses his love for her, despite knowing of her relationship with Sawyer. Suddenly, the group is confronted by Ben, who tells Jack they need to “talk.” He tells Jack about the Purge, and says that Naomi is a liar and that calling her boat will ensure the death of everyone on the island. When Jack refuses to hand over the sat phone, Ben radios the Others on the beach and orders them to execute Jin, Sayid and Bernard, and Jack is horrified when he hears three gunshots. He attacks Ben, beating him viciously, and then grabs the walkie and tells Tom that he will continue with his rescue mission and then return to kill him. Off the island, Jack drives recklessly through Los Angeles with the obituary in hand and arrives at a funeral parlor. He enters a room with a coffin and learns that no one attended the recent viewing, but declines to see the body, saying he is “neither” friend nor family, seemingly very emotional about the person’s death. He then unsuccessfully attempts to refill a narcotics prescription, claiming that his father Christian wrote the script, and becomes angry when another man calls him a “hero.” He steals oxycodone from the hospital, and Hamill confronts him, saying the woman crashed her car because she was distracted by a man standing on the bridge, ready to jump. He asks Jack if he has been drinking, and Jack angrily retorts that Hamill should go find the alcoholic Christian and see if he too is intoxicated.

At the Looking Glass, Mikhail shoots Bonnie and Greta, but is then harpooned by Desmond. Still believing in his “destiny,” Charlie asks the dying Bonnie for the code, saying that Ben betrayed her and she can get revenge by helping him, and she tells him the code is to the tune of “Good Vibrations.” A badly injured Ben introduces Alex to her mother, Danielle, and they having a moving reunion as they tie up Ben together. Jack confesses to Kate that Bernard, Jin and Sayid are dead, but they decide not to tell the others just yet. However, it is revealed that the three are still alive at the beach, and Sawyer and Juliet watch from afar, knowing they can do nothing without guns. Just then, Hurley barrels onto the scene in a Dharma van and runs over some of the Others, and Sayid overpowers another man with his exceptional fighting skills. Tom, finding himself outnumbered, surrenders, but Sawyer shoots him anyway “for taking the kid off the raft,” referring to Walt. Hurley calls Jack, and the survivors are immensely relieved to hear that the plan worked and everyone is safe. Claire inquires after Charlie, and Hurley says he will surely return soon. Down at the Looking Glass, Charlie inputs the code and un-jams the equipment, and immediately receives an incoming call from none other than Penelope Widmore, Desmond’s girlfriend. She is thrilled to hear that Charlie is on the island and Desmond is safe, but is confused when Charlie mentions Naomi and her boat, saying she does not know her. Just then, Desmond notices that Mikhail has disappeared, and Charlie sees him outside the porthole with a grenade. He pulls the pin just as Charlie slams the door and the window explodes, filling the room with water, and Charlie realizes his end has come. He quickly writes “NOT PENNY’S BOAT” on his hand and shows it to the frantic Desmond outside, who nods, and Charlie crosses himself as he drowns.

At the same time, Claire comforts a distressed Aaron, and Naomi is delighted to find that Charlie was successful and the sat phone works. Just as she dials her boat, however, she is knifed in the back by the suddenly-appearing Locke. Jack is furious and grabs the phone, despite Locke pulling a gun on him and Ben desperately telling him it will be “the beginning of the end,” and a man named Minkowski answers. The survivors celebrate, believing that they are finally saved. Off the island, Jack calls someone and asks to meet at the airport. Once there, his guest arrives—and it is Kate, revealing that it is actually a flash-forward and Jack and Kate have indeed made it off the island. He tells her about the obituary and says he has been flying every week, desperately hoping that the plane will crash because he is “sick of lying” and they made “a mistake” in leaving the island. Upset, Kate leaves, saying that “he’s going to be wondering” where she is, and Jack, anguished, calls after her that they “have to go back.” Includes commercials.
