GREY'S ANATOMY: LOVE/ADDICTION (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, George, having just admitted that he returns Izzie's romantic feelings, confesses that he regrets his hasty marriage to Callie and intends to tell her that it is over. Elsewhere, Meredith and Derek decide that they will continue their sexual rendezvous despite being officially broken up. Richard, wanting to appease Adele, commits to being a better delegator, and Cristina decides to give away her many gifts from her would-be wedding to Burke in exchange for surgeries and other perks. George attempts to talk with Callie, but they are distracted when several patients, including a one-year-old, arrive after being injured in a gas-main explosion at an apartment building. Cristina panics when Burke's fearsome mother Jane arrives at the hospital, and Alex grows suspicious as he cares for the distressed baby. Bailey struggles to manage her clueless interns, and Meredith is flustered when Jane criticizes her for her arguably tactless comments at the wedding. Archie, an elderly man injured in the explosion, explains that his neighbors are like his family and advises Mark not to live a bachelor's life forever. Izzie frets to George that he cannot end his marriage after all, as chief resident Callie is her boss, and they reluctantly agree to postpone their affair for the time being.
Bailey begs Meredith to work in the clinic, sure that she cannot trust the "idiot interns," and once there, Meredith is exasperated to encounter the overeager Lexie. Alex's suspicions are confirmed when the baby's lab results come back positive for crystal meth, and he quickly informs Richard that the explosion was in fact caused by the parents' home lab. Richard instructs Callie to begin the necessary protocol, and Archie is shocked by the news that his "family" is involved with drugs. Clark, another patient, codes in front of George due to the combined stress of his meth use and injuries from the explosion, and when George revives him singlehandedly, Callie realizes that Bailey defied her instructions by sending Meredith to the clinic. Meredith is annoyed by Lexie's constant hovering and tells Cristina that she must confront "Mama" herself, while elsewhere George suggests to Jane that Burke "dodged a bullet" in evading an ill-advised marriage, leading Jane to deduce that George himself has made some unwise choices. Derek invites Meredith to lunch in defiance of their no-dating policy, and when Alex furiously confronts the baby's father for endangering his son with the meth lab, Dave knocks Alex out and flees with the child.
Richard scolds Callie for the chaos in front of an uncomfortable Izzie, and Meredith tends to Alex as Derek talks with Jane about Burke's decision and what it means to be "an honorable man." Clark begins to suffer withdrawal symptoms as Callie panics about the kidnapped child and confesses to Mark that she suspects George of having an affair. Derek finds Dave with the baby, who has suffered a stroke because of his meth exposure, and Bailey angrily upbraids Alex for his reckless behavior in confronting the panicked drug dealer. Meredith firmly rejects Lexie's attempts to bond with her and, when Lexie protests that they are family, points out that they did not truly have "the same dad." Cristina finally meets with Jane, who unexpectedly praises her strength and expresses sympathy for the loss of her teacher, rather than of her fiancé. Clark desperately laments his drug use before suddenly dying, and George realizes that he cannot be "this guy" and must tell Callie the truth. Dave's wife Marla is crushed to learn of the explosion and their forthcoming criminal charges, but Cristina, having suffered a recent life-changing trauma of her own, manages to calm her. Izzie tells a saddened Archie that Dave and Marla were not "bad people" despite their actions, and Callie, drained by the day's events, tearfully begs George to delay their serious talk for another time. Derek admits that he "has a problem" and asks Mark's help in removing himself from Meredith's life, but quickly finds that he cannot resist her after all as Cristina returns home to her apartment, now empty of unwanted gifts thanks to Jane.
