LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT {LAW AND ORDER: SVU}: NIGHT {CROSSOVER EPISODE WITH "LAW AND ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY"} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of police dramas—a spin-off of "Law & Order"—about the sexual crimes investigated by the elite Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department. Part one of a two-part crossover story between the NBC police dramas, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Trial by Jury.” In this episode, a woman’s body is found with several hundred dollars on it, and Warner observes that she was raped and died of heart failure. They track footprints from the crime scene to an apartment using a dog, but it turns out to be a woman who stole further money from the body, totaling five thousand dollars. The money turns up no fingerprints, but they find a condom wrapper from a sex club run by women, and Olivia goes to investigate. She learns that a man was ousted from the club the night before for being violent with a woman, and when they find the man, he insists it was part of a fantasy “game.” They assume that he is lying and killed the woman later, but when they find his real victim, she tells them that the dead woman was the bathroom attendant at the club.
The woman is identified as Marguerite Beauclaire, and her father says that she had heart problems, which caused her death. Later, the detectives are confronted by Mildred Quintana, who runs a support program for immigrant women, and she tells them that the same man who attacked Marguerite has raped many of her women and given them money in the same way, and demands to know why he has not been caught. They explain that they need the victims themselves to report the crimes, but she says they are all in the country illegally and are afraid of cops. She supplies them with several names, however, and they attempt to talk to the women, but are quickly sent away. Olivia gets through to one Bosnian woman named Nina, who says she will be an outcast if she admits what happened to her due to her strict religious culture and traditional brother, but she gives Olivia the money that her attacker left on her. The prints on the bills are those of a lawyer, Jason Whitaker, who refuses to supply an alibi and sends the detectives away, leading them to guess that he is protecting a client. Casey learns that his main client is a wealthy woman named Eleanor Duvall who has a highly eccentric son, Gabriel. Elliot goes to see her and gets Gabriel’s address, and finds that he is an absent-minded genius of sorts. Elliot intends to bring him in for a lineup, but they then find that Nina has been arrested by other cops, which angers Quintana. Whitaker arrives at the station house and collects Gabriel, and Quintana reprimands him as he leaves. Whitaker makes a snide comment about the women she works with, and the detectives realize that he was the one who had Nina arrested in order to protect Gabriel.
Olivia goes to rescue Nina from Immigration lockup, and Casey pulls strings so that she is granted temporary citizenship because of the crime committed against her. She returns home, and her brother, Milan, thanks Casey for her help. Casey confronts Jason again for trying to have Nina deported, and demands that he bring in Gabriel for a lineup. Nina picks him as her attacker, but Eleanor arrives and takes Gabriel home. He leaves behind a tissue, however, and when Elliot has it tested for DNA evidence, Warner notes that there are smudges of makeup on it as well. Later, Casey is attacked and beaten in her office by an unknown assailant and is found by Olivia. Elliot immediately goes to Gabriel’s home and threatens him angrily, believing him to be the culprit. At the hospital, Casey is frightened that she cannot remember the incident, and Olivia comforts her, saying they will find her attacker. Elliot checks the security tapes and discovers that it was Milan, and when he arrests him, he says he did it because she ruined Nina’s honor by making her rape public knowledge.
Eleanor scolds Elliot for scaring her son and threatens his job, demanding an apology. Elliot then tells Cragen that Nina no longer wishes to testify, but a badly bruised Casey goes to her home and begs her to stand up for herself. She agrees, but Casey is then removed from the case by Arthur Branch, who tells her she is too emotionally involved. The case is given to Tracey Kibre, who counsels Nina through her testimony. Elliot then tells Casey than the DNA testing came back on Gabriel’s tissue, and that it had Marguerite’s tears on it as well, proving his guilt, and Elliot arrests him.
