GREY'S ANATOMY: THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS LIFE {PARTS 1 AND 2} {PRIVATE PRACTICE CROSSOVER EPISODE} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this two-part episode, which also serves as a backdoor pilot for the spin-off series "Private Practice," Addison departs for California and arrives at her friends' "co-op medicine" clinic, Seaside Wellness Center, and she has an awkward "not-horny" elevator ride with handsome naturopathic doctor Pete Wilder. Cristina, flustered when her mother teams up with Burke's "mama" to plan the wedding, begs Callie to be a bridesmaid, and Meredith, still recovering from her near-drowning, resolves to let Derek "in" emotionally. Addison tells her fertility special friend Naomi Bennett, who still works alongside her ex-husband, internist Sam, that she has decided to have a baby alone, as a man is clearly "not in the cards." Sam tries to help Kathy, a woman desperate to understand her husband Paul's disinterest in sex, and psychiatrist Violet Turner has a laugh at pediatrician Cooper Freedman's expense when he admits that an ill-advised one-night stand has stolen his car.
Back in Seattle, Meredith's stepmother Susan Grey comes into Seattle Grace with nonstop hiccups, though Meredith suspects that she's merely trying to foster conversation between father and daughter, and Jane Doe/"Ava" chides Alex for ruining his budding relationship with Addison. Izzie is delighted to "help" with Cristina's wedding, and Sam refuses to expand upon his divorce from Naomi when Addison demands answers. The doctors then attempt to resolve a fight between five feuding "parents-to-be," including a surrogate, Lisa, who's pregnant with one of three men's baby, and Addison agrees to help out as her temporary OB-GYN. Susan undergoes a simple outpatient operation as Thatcher and Meredith tentatively discuss Ellis' recent death, and Violet tells Paul to at least attempt having sex with his wife. Sam sternly tells playboy Pete not to pursue Addison, while back in Washington George considers transferring to Mercy West, unable to handle his guilt over his one-night affair with Izzie.
A furious Sloan blames Alex for Addison's departure, and as Addison browses potential sperm donors, Naomi laments that she has ended up alone despite "doing everything right" with her marriage and daughter, Maya. Violet is floored to learn that her marriage-averse ex-boyfriend Allan has a young new wife, and Addison determines that Lisa has a dangerous placental condition – and that the baby is hers, not the donor Carol's. Cooper is devastated by the "death" of his missing car, and Cristina, forced into wedding-dress shopping, is shocked to find out that Preston wants a traditional church ceremony after all. Paul is crushed by his inability to please Kathy, and Derek is surprised to learn that Sloan actually remained faithful to Addison during their brief relationship, but pretended to have cheated in order to let her leave without a sense of guilt over her fling with Alex. Addison, who finds herself haunted by a strange voice in the Seaside elevator, is heartbroken to learn from Naomi that she is essentially infertile, though all three women are entertained by a glance at hunky young receptionist William "Dell" Parker, heading out on his daily surf.
Ava learns that she requires additional brain surgery for which she must be conscious, and Susan returns with a mild infection and begins a course of antibiotics. Addison reluctantly tries out "quack" Pete's acupuncture treatment, and Lisa, stressed by all the fighting, goes into labor a month early. Violet learns that Paul has a hormone imbalance, not an emotional issue, and wonders if her profession is becoming "irrelevant." Ava turns out to be multilingual, but fails to recover her memories after the operation, and when Lisa and her newborn daughter barely make it through emergency surgery, Addison is frustrated to see that Carol and the three men seem more concerned with fighting over their "possession" than with the two lives. An exasperated Bailey forces George and Burke to discuss their respective relationship woes with one another, and Naomi and Violet offer the immature Cooper some no-nonsense dating advice for avoiding future heartache (and theft). Addison is embarrassed when she impulsively confides in Pete about "wasting time" with Derek and Sloan, but he gives her a hearty kiss to assure her that she's not "dried up" just yet.
Susan's condition suddenly worsens, and George asks Burke if it's really possible to love two people at once as Izzie struggles with her own sense of guilt towards the still-oblivious Callie. Sam tells Paul that he has a serious but treatable tumor that is causing his lack of sex drive, and Kathy tearfully admits to Violet that she cheated on her husband out of desperation. Naomi is flustered when "fetus" Dell asks her on a date, and Sam warns Addison that Pete can't manage to connect with women since his wife's death years ago, confessing that there was "no good reason" behind his own divorce from Naomi. Violet tells Cooper about Allan's speedy marriage, and the two agree that rejection can be incredibly painful. Preston firmly tells his mother that he will eventually "lead" Cristina to a place of true happiness in their marriage, though she points out that his defensiveness reveals his true uncertainty, and Lisa decides to give custody of the baby to Carol on the condition that they are all involved in her life, giving the newborn "two moms and three dads."
Izzie begs her George not to leave Seattle Grace, and the two almost give in to their attraction once again. Ava, upset to still have no memories of her life, wonders why the compassionate Alex has such a hard time with romance, and Susan experiences an extremely rare complication and is rushed into surgery when she becomes septic. A stunned Meredith is forced to tell her father that his wife has died as a result of mere hiccups, and a devastated Thatcher slaps his daughter for "betraying" Susan's trust. Cristina assures Burke that she's happy with her new wedding dress, and Derek hesitates when he sees Meredith bonding with her fellow interns over their "crappy families." Addison prepares to leave Seaside Wellness, but Naomi urges her to consider staying, and Pete explains the truth behind her mysterious "elevator god." Includes commercials and promos.
