SOPRANOS, THE: SOPRANO HOME MOVIES (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comic, dramatic series centering around the crime empire and family life of Tony Soprano, a modern-day Mafia boss.
In this episode, a teenager witnesses Tony fleeing from the feds, dropping a gun as he goes, and uses the incident to his advantage when he himself is caught with drugs nearly three years later. Janice dismisses Tony's arrest on the weapons charge as "no big deal," and Neil Mink quickly secures Tony's release on bail, angering the federal officers who have been working on a RICO case against him. Phil attends a welcome-home party and decides that he is ready for a more serene life, and Tony and Carmela accept Bobby and Janice's invitation to their upstate New York home for Tony's 47th birthday. Bobby gifts Tony with an AR-10 rifle, and Tony reflects on a disturbing story of a child's accidental drowning as A.J. takes advantage of his parents' absence to blow off work and have a few friends over.
Tony notes that Bobby has been a "solid performer" and hints that he intends to offer him a job within the family, though noting that Bobby has never "popped his cherry" by murdering someone. Janice gifts Tony with some family home movies that have been transferred to videotape, but the night's festivities gradually sour as everyone has too much to drink and Janice shares a story from their "dysfunctional" family's past in which Johnny accidentally shot a bullet through Livia's beehive hairdo. When Tony begins making rude cracks about Janice, Bobby abruptly sucker-punches him, leading to a nasty brawl. Carmela and Janice quickly calm the men down and Tony states that Bobby won the scrap "fair and square." However, as morning dawns, he begins to obsess over the fight, sure that he could have defeated his younger brother-in-law under other circumstances.
Tony and Bobby head off to "play golf" as Janice reflects on a violent ex-boyfriend, and Carmela, aware of her true meaning, sternly informs her that Tony has never struck her or the children – apart from one incident with A.J. – and is "not a vindictive man." Tony and Bobby sit down with two Quebecois drug dealers offering a large quantity of prescription medications. Tony decides that Bobby will finally commit his first murder by killing a troublesome brother-in-law of one of the Canadians as part of the bargain. Tony departs the vacation home with Carmela, and Bobby abruptly heads to Canada, where he executes the man in a laundry room, clearly uncomfortable with the task. Back at home, Tony learns that the feds have picked up the seemingly unimportant weapons charge as part of the RICO case; he then sits down to watch the family movies as Bobby returns home to his kids, brooding over his dark actions.
