GREY'S ANATOMY: DROWNING ON DRY LAND (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, after the ferryboat crash, Meredith is accidentally knocked into the water by a patient and, after a moment's hesitation, allows herself to slip under the surface. At the hospital, George tells Bailey's patient that her son Chris is safe, though Bailey knows that George has not yet found the boy. Webber instructs Alex to handle the chaotic waiting room situation, and Addison seems disturbed at the fact that her pregnant Jane Doe is alone. Back at the site, Izzie panics while trying to treat the man trapped under a car, admitting to his friends that she is "out of practice," having been on probation for some time. Derek encounters Meredith's patient and wonders where she has gone, while George continues searching for Chris and Alex tries to deal with an angry crowd of frightened people searching for their loved ones. Sydney offers her assistance, but Alex gets an idea on his own. Izzie calls Webber and explains the situation, and he tells her that she will have to drill burr holes into the man's head to relieve the pressure on his brain.
Alex takes Polaroid photos of the patients so that they can be identified, though several people grow upset upon not seeing their relative's picture. One man mentions his pregnant wife, and Alex tells Burke and Addison that he has identified their patient, but Addison reminds him to be completely sure that it is her before giving the man hope. At the dock, the traumatized girl who witnessed Meredith's fall, Lisa, finally manages to communicate with Derek, and Alex takes George to the morgue and photographs several bodies. George is unnerved by Alex's apparently casual attitude as he looks for Chris, and they soon come across the body of another pregnant woman. Webber and Mark carefully talk Izzie through the drilling process and she manages to create the necessary holes without further injuring the man, to her and his friends' great relief. As a Coast Guard officer takes Lisa to safety, Derek pulls a lifeless-looking Meredith from the water and frantically begins CPR. George admits to Bailey that he has not found Chris, guessing that he died in the water, and when Izzie arrives with her patient, Webber informs her that she is off probation and may continue treating the man in the OR. Izzie delightedly tells Cristina the news, though Cristina is distracted by the fact that Meredith did not return from the crash site.
Alex posts the photos of the dead bodies, and the husband breaks down in grief upon realizing that his wife is the woman in the morgue, not the Jane Doe in surgery. Burke is frustrated when Cristina explains that she needs to tell "her person" about her engagement before it will feel real, unaware that Meredith has arrived in an ambulance. Alex shares a moment with Addison as he checks on Jane Doe, and George is stunned to find that Chris has been on Callie's operating table all along and will indeed live. Lisa is reunited with her mother, and Bailey and Webber are forced to throw a desperate Derek out of Meredith's room. Mark comforts Derek as Burke offers his assistance and Addison joins in as well, surprised to find herself fighting to save her ex-husband's mistress. Cristina panics upon hearing the news, and George, still mourning his father, points out that she may not live, but Izzie declares that she "believes in the good" and is sure that they will all survive the experience, though adds that her best friend made "a terrible mistake" in marrying Callie. Webber admits that they are losing Meredith as they continue trying to revive her, but she then "wakes up" in an exam room. She is stunned to find herself accompanied by Denny Duquette and Dylan, the bomb squad officer killed by the bazooka explosive, and they dryly inform her that she is indeed dead.
