GEORGE LOPEZ: GEORGE TESTI-LIES FOR BENNY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, set in Los Angeles, in which comedian George Lopez plays family man "George Lopez." In this episode, Benny's criminal trial comes to an unpleasant end when the jury very quickly finds her guilty, and Martin explains to the family that she can help herself at the sentencing by bringing in character witnesses. Aware that there are very few people who will speak positively of Benny, George and Angie resolve to track down her estranged mother, Luisa. Ernie and Max are alarmed by George's stories of his "old-school" grandmother, and when she arrives, George admits to Angie that he lied and claimed that Benny had been shot in order to get her there. Luisa, who kicked her teenage daughter out of the house upon learning that she was pregnant, is disgusted to learn that she has gotten into yet more trouble, but George and Angie beg her to put aside her disappointment and testify on Benny's behalf. Luisa reluctantly agrees, but when she casually reveals that Benny attempted to give her infant son away to another family, George begins to rethink his benevolent attitude.
Angie urges George to "be the bigger person" and support his mother despite her many flaws, and Benny is shocked to see Luisa at the hearing. Luisa takes the stand and, rather than asking for leniency, cruelly denounces her daughter as "worthless," stating that she deserves her punishment. Taken aback by this, George changes his mind and urges the jury not to send Benny to jail, pointing out that she clearly came from a broken and unloving home. Later, Benny tells George that she received probation and community service thanks to his heartfelt words, but he remains angry at her for the would-be adoption. She explains that she made his new "parents" promise to treat him with love and care, though he argues that she then failed to do so herself when the couple returned him, preferring to get a puppy instead. Luisa then departs the house without a kind word for Benny, however, and George agrees that she is at least slightly better than her own mother. When Max returns home, George firmly declares his love for his son, determined to break the pathological family cycle. Includes commercials and promos.
