LUCKY LOUIE {PILOT} (TV)

Summary

The first episode in this sitcom about a working-class man, his family and the dilemmas he must face.

Louie and Kim hold a party for Lucy’s fourth birthday in the apartment. It ends disastrously and the party guests are sent away. Louie goes into the closet to masturbate while Kim gives Lucy her bath. She catches him in the closet while looking for Kim’s bath toy and is taken aback. The next morning, she tries to talk to him about it and is forced to ask some uncomfortable questions. She promises to have sex with him every night that week, to which he agrees.

Louie meets Walter, his new neighbor, outside his door. Walter is unhappy when he discovers his present to Lucy, a black Barbie doll, has been thrown away. He is convinced that Louie is prejudiced against him and storms off. At the café, Louie tells Mike and Rich about Kim’s offer, but Mike tries to convince him that what she really wants is to get pregnant. Later, Louie tries to apologize to Walter and invites him and his family to dinner the following night.

That night, Kim tries to goad Louie into having sex, but Mike’s comments have made him suspicious. Upon questioning, she reveals that she is trying to get pregnant and have another child. He counters that they cannot afford to raise another kid. Before anything further can happen, Lucy interrupts and calls Louie away to read her a bedtime story.

Kim talks to Tina about Louie’s behavior, who advises her to take initiative and seduce him. She tries just that, but Louie still will not capitulate. She leaves; Louie, frustrated, goes into the closet to masturbate but is interrupted by the arrival of Walter and his family for dinner, but he has forgotten and they leave.

Louie talks to Mike about his situation. He advises him to have another kid despite not being able to afford it. Louie confesses that his reluctance to have another child truly stems from his feelings of helplessness about his own life. Despite this, he desperately wants to make his marriage work.

Louie tries to apologize to Walter about his recent behavior. He explains that he’s trying to get a black friend so that his daughter can become more culturally sensitive. Walter reluctantly accepts his apology and his invitation to a barbeque that weekend.

Later, Louie and Kim stop by the bank to pay off some of their bills. They have little left over, which convinces Kim that Louie was right in not having another child. She gets emotional and starts to cry before Louie calms her down. He tries to buy her a gumball, but the machine eats his nickel. He snaps and proclaims that regardless of their financial situation, he and Kim will have another baby. The episode ends as Kim and Louie head into the closet to have sex.
