WIRE, THE: THE BOYS OF SUMMER {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic series about the police and the criminals they target. This is the first episode of the series' fourth season, which focuses on the interactions between Baltimore's inner city educational system, the Stanfield drug trade, a tight mayoral race, and the MCU's ongoing war on dealers.

Pearson goes to a hardware store and gets a deluxe nail gun for her evening's work with Partlow. They subsequently shoot one of Stanfield's enemies in a deserted row house, pour lime on the body, cover it with a shower curtain, and board up the entrance with a plywood sheet before nailing it shut. Accordingly, the bodies of Stanfield's victims don't materialize, much to the puzzlement of the police. Across town, the MCU studies wiretaps on Stanfield's crew as Freamon, Greggs, Massey, and Sydnor confer with Pearlman about an extension on their wire. Freamon also wants subpoenas served for several politicians' financial records to follow up on the Barksdale monies, which Greggs has no trouble getting the distracted new lieutenant, Jimmy Asher, to sign. Elsewhere, Carcetti gets tips from his elderly mentor, "Young Tony," about his past days as Baltimore's mayor. However, Deputy Campaign Manager Norman Wilson reminds Carcetti of his scheduled neighborhood appearance. Meanwhile, Royce presides at a harborfront ceremony after fending off requests for debates from both Carcetti and Gray, all the while tailed by Hauk as a new addition to his security detail.

Broadus, having a slow afternoon pushing drugs on a street corner, allows young runner Namond Brice, the son of still-incarcerated Wee-Bey, to take the afternoon off. Namond joins up with his school buddies Michael Lee and Randy Wagstaff, son of Melvin "Cheese," to try catching pigeons for Stanfield. When Duquan "Dukie" Weems accidentally scares off the birds, a fight begins between Namond and Weems, which Lee quickly breaks up. Randy and Weems later strike up their own friendship. Broadus finds out from Anderson that his girlfriend Patrice is now seeing Fruit. Broadus warns him against retaliation, even as Slim Charles drives by to keep Broadus in line. Broadus is later harassed by Carver and Colicchio while McNulty stops by on his rounds, fresh off having turned down Daniels' request to return to an investigative unit. Pryzbylewski also remains busy, reporting for his first day of work as a middle school math teacher, during which he meets beleaguered principal Claudell Withers and assistant principal Marcia Donnelly. That evening, D'Agostino pressures Carcetti to make phone calls raising funds for his campaign; instead he wastes time amidst worries about his future. Carcetti ends up drunk on his front lawn. Anderson walks up to Fruit and shoots him in the head as Patrice screams and flees. After hearing about the shooting on the wire, Freamon meets with Moreland, who gives him Fruit's cell phone. Stanfield quickly makes plans to have Anderson killed, realizing that the murder wasn't drug-related.

The following morning, a battered Weems admits to his friends that neighborhood toughs beat him him up. The quartet plans revenge, although the attempt to humiliate their enemies ends with the boys being pummeled anew. As Carcetti is taken for a tour of a down-and-out neighborhood, Pryzbylewski sits amongst a group of teachers and hears a useless lecture about lesson-planning; McNulty hears an equally senseless lecture for patrolmen about fighting terrorism. Moreland shows up and asks McNulty if he knows Anderson, resulting in McNulty's invitation to dinner with himself, Russell, and their kids. Carcetti tries to reconcile with Gray, to no effect. Upon later hearing shaky polling figures from D'Agostino, he begins to doubt that he can win the election. He again turns to drink while staring out at Baltimore's harbor. As Pryzbylewski first takes in his battered classroom, Little Kevin approaches Randy and tells him to give Anderson a message to meet Patrice in a remote locale. When Anderson follows through, he's cornered by Partlow and Pearson, who shoot him and seal up his body in another abandoned row house. Having been told of Anderson's fate by an amused Little Kevin, Randy sits on his stoop and contemplates his part in Anderson's death.
