DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: BANG (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. On Friday, Carolyn learns about Harvey’s affair with and confronts him at the supermarket about it. She pulls out a handgun and attempts to murder Harvey, who runs and locks himself in his office. Carolyn decides to hold the other shoppers hostage. The night before, Lynette has a recurring dream reliving the last time she saw Mary Alice alive, moments before she committed suicide. On Friday morning, Lynette talks to Susan and Gabrielle about her dream. Mary Alice’s old house has just been sold and a new neighbor moves in, Art Shepherd, a bachelor living with his invalid sister. Bree reveals that she knows about a domestic incident between Orson and his first wife, but Orson claims he pushed her down a flight of stairs in self-defense after she attacked him over a minor incident. When Orson learns that Carolyn was the one who told Bree about the incident he reveals Harvey’s affair to Bree. She seems satisfied with his explanation, albeit continually frustrated at Orson’s various secrets. Nora tries to talk to Lynette and Tom despite her and Lynette’s continued animosity. She reveals that she and the kids are moving to Mexico, and the Scavos are furious that they won’t be able to see Kayla anymore. Meanwhile, Carlos and Gabrielle continue meeting about their divorce proceedings. Carlos’s lawyer brings up Gabrielle “seducing” Carlos several days ago, and Carlos even supplies an audio recording of their tryst. Gabrielle becomes so enraged that she must be physically dragged from the courthouse, and Carlos receives possession of everything in their house. While preparing for her trip to Paris with Ian, Susan finds a discarded beer can under her sink and Julie claims Austin left it there while she was tutoring him, making Susan concerned. Julie is indignant that Susan doesn’t seem to trust her and leaves with their argument unresolved. Carolyn speaks with Bree and urges her to leave Orson. Bree decides to reveal Harvey’s infidelity to Carolyn. Lynette wants to sue Nora for full custody of Kayla, feeling that she’d be better off with them than with Nora. Gabrielle starts breaking glasses in the house to get back at Carlos, and in retaliation Carlos takes a sledgehammer to the walls. Julie runs into Austin at the supermarket and he secretly slips a flask of alcohol into her backpack. Carolyn calls Harvey at work to tell him that she knows about his affair. He reveals that the other party involved, a flight attendant named Monique, was found dead eight months ago. Their conversation is interrupted when the alcohol flask in Julie’s backpack falls out, discovered by a cashier. Harvey is alerted and goes to deal with it as Carolyn retrieves her handgun and leaves for the supermarket. Lynette leaves for the supermarket as well as Harvey calls Edie to tell her that they caught Austin shoplifting the alcohol, and she agrees to come down as well. While finalizing her packing for Paris Susan is informed of the incident at the supermarket as well and heads down herself. At the supermarket Lynette strikes up a conversation with Art, but quickly excuses herself when she spies Nora entering the supermarket. In Harvey’s office Susan expresses her displeasure with Julie’s apparent delinquent behavior before heading out to talk to Ian. At that moment Carolyn enters to begin her confrontation with Harvey. Lynette and Nora run into each other, and Nora expresses her anger at Lynette’s decision to sue her for custody of Kayla. Their argument is interrupted by Carolyn’s gunshots as Edie hides along with Harvey in his office. Julie and Austin are amongst the hostages Carolyn takes. In the parking lot Susan tells Ian that they can’t go to Paris due to Julie’s “rebellion,” but Ian believes she’s overreacting. Lynette and Nora hide as Carolyn shoots a supermarket worker who tries to run out the door. Carolyn moves people at gunpoint to the back of the store. Harvey phones the police as Edie urges him to help Julie and Austin, whom she can see over the supermarket’s security monitors. Lynette attempts to call Tom but Carolyn interrupts her and gets her off the phone. Ian leaves Susan and she becomes aware of the hostage situation, highly concerned for Julie’s safety. The neighborhood gathers at Bree’s house to watch news coverage of the hostage situation. Carlos and Gabrielle stop by as well, interrupting their demolition of the house to do so. Carolyn continues holding up the hostages and continues to blame Harvey for the whole thing. Despite the situation, Austin feels confident that neither he nor Julie will die. Susan tries to get the police to have them exchange her for Julie, but they do not comply. Instead she steals a megaphone and tries to negotiate with Carolyn directly before being carried off by the police. Orson and Bree are horrified to learn that Carolyn is the one taking hostages, and the house receives a call from Edie giving them more information about the situation. Tom arrives with his children and is brought up to speed about Lynette and the other hostages being trapped in the supermarket. Bree feels responsible for spurring Carolyn to her extreme measures by revealing Harvey’s affair to her. On the police’s advice Harvey tries to reason with Carolyn over the supermarket’s P.A. system, but Carolyn overhears Edie in the office and believes that Harvey is having another affair, further enraging her. At Bree’s house, Gabrielle notes to Carlos that she understands Carolyn’s feelings, believing that in the right circumstances she could take similar actions. She remarks that the divorce has turned them both into “bitter, hateful” people. Tom goes down to the police barricade in front of the supermarket to comfort Susan, assuring her that Carolyn would never hurt Julie. He says Lynette will be fine as well, but soon reveals that he feels guilty about her being there as well. Inside, Nora takes the opportunity to talk to Lynette about Kayla despite Carolyn asking them not to speak. Carolyn comes over and Lynette talks about their situation; when Lynette tells Carolyn that Nora seduced her husband Carolyn immediately shoots Nora in the chest. Susan fears that Julie has been shot just as Ian returns from the airport, having just heard about the situation. Lynette and Art try to stop Nora from bleeding out, but Carolyn won’t let them leave to get her medical attention. In her last moments Nora tells Lynette that Kayla was “the only good thing” in her life, and that it now falls to Lynette to take care of her. Lynette promises that she will as Nora dies. Carolyn believes that Lynette wanted her to kill Nora but Lynette vehemently denies it and argues with her, remarking that Carolyn’s problems with her husband are no more severe than anyone else’s difficulties, but that they learn to grow and live with them. Carolyn tries to shoot Lynette as Art throws a can at her, off-setting her aim so that Lynette suffers only a shot to her arm. Austin takes the opportunity to grapple with Carolyn to prevent her from reaching her gun, but Carolyn ends up being shot in the head by one of the hostages, killing her instantly. The police move in and release the hostages, and Susan is reunited with Julie. Lynette is brought to a hospital to treat her gunshot wound, and while recuperating she experiences her recurring dream involving Mary Alice again. This time in her dream she tries to prevent Mary Alice from shooting herself, but is told that she cannot, and that she should simply “enjoy this beautiful day.” Thereafter, Lynette does not experience the dream. Includes commercials.
