ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES, THE: CHAPTER SEVEN: LOVE'S SWEET SONG {IRELAND, APRIL 1916 AND LONDON, MAY 1916} (TV)
Summary
This direct-to-video feature is an edited combination of episodes from "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," the adventure series about a young American who travels the world and becomes involved with the historical figures and events of his time. This installment contains the flashback scenes from the episodes "Ireland, April 1916" and "London, May 1916." The program begins as young Indy stows away on a ship headed for Europe with Remy Baudoin, planning to enlist in the Belgian army. They land in Ireland and make their way to Dublin, where they secure waiter jobs at a bar, saving their money for ferry tickets. At a bakery, Indiana meets two pretty sisters, Maggie and Nuala, and their brother Sean is highly curious about Indiana's views on the revolution, as he himself is a Republican and wants to overthrow the British. Maggie, believing that Indy is an American millionaire, invites him to the theatre, where everyone sings along with some traditional Irish ballads. Back at the bar, however, Indiana meets disgruntled playwright Sean O'Casey, who dismisses the stereotypical performance and takes him to a rehearsal of another, more serious play, directed by one William Butler Yeats. Backstage, Yeats reads O'Casey's play and tells him that it is "too realistic" for the stage, which frustrates him further.
Indiana and Maggie continue their courtship as Sean and O'Casey argue about politics, with O'Casey desiring an independent and socialist Ireland and telling Indiana about how theatre can "become life" and be used for important messages. Sean promises not to tell his sister that Indiana is not wealthy after all, but when Indiana reveals that he intends to fight in the Great War rather than in Ireland's, which he feels is pointless, the two argue and Sean forbids him to see Maggie. Indiana eventually tells her the truth about himself and she reacts angrily, saying she does not wish to see him again. Sean challenges him to a brawl, but they realize the pointlessness of it all and bond as friends instead. Remy finally procures the ferry tickets and Indiana prepares to leave for London, but on Easter Monday, the Irish rebels swarm the post office and declare that Ireland is now an independent sovereign state. They prepare for battle with the British forces, and Sean enters the fray despite Maggie's pleas, though O'Casey opts not to get involved. Indiana, Maggie and Remy take shelter in the bar as the two sides fight, and eventually the rebels surrender. Maggie is deeply relieved to find Sean alive in prison, though he is distressed to hear that many of his friends have been executed. Indiana tells him that he and the other rebels are now widely considered to be heroes, and he decides that their sacrifice was worth it. Remy and Indiana leave for London, reflecting on the experience and debating the nuances of love versus infatuation.
Upon arriving in London, they head to the Belgian recruiting office. The sergeant sees through Indiana's dimwitted attempts to pass himself off as Belgian, but allows him to sign up anyway. Remy takes up with a lady friend and Indiana tries to charm a young widow on a bus, but she is offended by his advances, as well as by the porter's attempts to invite her to a suffrage meeting. When a zeppelin passes overheard, everyone dives for cover and Indiana is rescued by the porter, Vicky Prentiss, who gamely gets back on the bus and continues her work when the danger passes. Indiana attends the suffrage meeting, where he defends a speaker against a rude male heckler and has tea with Vicky afterwards, during which they are both revealed to be impressive polyglots. They talk about their travel experiences and enjoy a stroll in the park, then opting to assist an impoverished woman and her children with a loan. Indiana invites Vicky to accompany him to Oxford to visit his former tutor and family friend, Miss Seymour, and she hesitantly agrees. Miss Seymour disapproves strongly of Indiana's decision to enlist and orders him to inform his father in a letter, and over tea, Vicky makes her "very spirited" opinions about suffrage known. Seymour approves of her gusto and invites them both to a dinner party with Winston Churchill, and Vicky gets into a debate about women's rights with him as well.
Indiana and Vicky's romance blossoms as they explore Oxford, and when they go to visit her parents, Mrs. Prentiss tells Indiana about her own suffragette past and her terrible treatment in prison, explaining that she was fighting her own "war" for her daughter. The couple declares their love for one another, but when Indiana is finally called up to war, Vicky stops him from proposing, saying that she wants to have a career as a writer and feels that she cannot also be married. She points out that they may feel differently after the war as well, and Indiana leaves, hurt. He and Remy, who has recently married Suzette, board the train for France, but Vicky appears at the train station for one last look as he leaves. Commercials deleted.
