GREY'S ANATOMY: THE NAME OF THE GAME (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Izzie and Meredith both turn to knitting to reinforce their shared "celibacy pact," and hyper-competitive Cristina quickly grows impatient during a game night double-date with Callie and George, whom she considers "Burke's puppy." She and Webber become unexpected rivals in a series of skills labs, and when George joins Addison in treating a 22-year-old pregnant woman, Molly, he is stunned to find that she's actually Meredith's secret half-sister. Burke and Karev discover that their terminal cancer patient, Beatrice Carver, has not yet told her teen daughter Amelia about her grim diagnosis, and Izzie, Meredith and Callie have an awkward conversation about George, who admits that he's desperate to "escape" Meredith in the aftermath of their disastrous sexual encounter.

Derek and Bailey perform an awake brain surgery on a precocious teen, Andrew Willis, testing his exceptional spelling skills during the procedure to monitor his cognitive abilities. A tormented George tells Addison about Molly and Meredith's secret connection, and Burke scolds Karev for his lack of bedside manner when he tries a tough-love approach with Beatrice, pointing out that she has very little time to explain things to her daughter. As Cristina and Richard ramp up their surgical rivalry, Meredith accidentally learns the truth about Molly and decides to meet her. Molly, unaware of the truth, happily tells Meredith all about her loving and solicitous father Thatcher and her brilliant younger sister Lexie, a medical student. Meredith, deeply hurt by Thatcher's obvious preference for his second family, takes out her anger in Callie's ortho lab, and Callie observes that neither Izzie nor Meredith really "see" George the way she does.

Karev finally stands up to Burke, declaring that it's important to tell patients even the most unpleasant truths, and Susan, Molly's mother, shyly acknowledges her kind-of stepdaughter, trying to explain that Thatcher really did care for Meredith, but was too "broken" by Ellis' betrayal to express it. Richard gently informs Thatcher that Ellis, their former mutual lover, is suffering from early onset Alzheimer's, and Thatcher admits to George that he "doesn't know how to know" his estranged daughter. George, though still angry with Meredith – who is secretly eavesdropping – assures him that his estranged daughter is talented and kindhearted. Beatrice finally sits Amelia down for a serious talk and tries to give her some loving advice about her future, and Izzie gifts Denny with a handmade sweater, continuing their ever-deepening flirtation. Cristina shows uncharacteristic humility as she asks Richard for some surgical tips, and back at home, she finally finds a clever way to get rid of unwanted houseguest George. George reunites with Callie in her secret hospital-basement dwelling, and Meredith's commitment to celibacy is tested when she meets Dr. Finn Dandridge, the handsome veterinarian.
