GREY'S ANATOMY: 17 SECONDS (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Addison notices the ongoing tension between Derek and Meredith as Finn breaks the bad news about Doc's bone cancer, and the hospital is swamped by the victims of a restaurant shooting committed by an angry ex-employee, Petey. Patient Deborah is furious that her fiancé Neal ducked behind her when the shooting started, though manager Brad, who fired Petey, boasts about his own lightning-fast reflexes. Burke is sent to Mercy West to retrieve a donor heart — for Denny — and Cristina is outraged when he brings Alex along instead of her. Bailey reluctantly allows Izzie to tell Denny the good news, though Izzie is upset when Denny then signs a "do not resuscitate" order in case the transplant fails, and restaurant busboy Will asks about co-worker Kendra who is pregnant and, as Derek discovers during her surgery, officially brain-dead.

A bitter Cristina urges Deborah to dump Neal, and at Mercy West, Burke runs into old rival Dr. Erica Hahn, who is taking the heart of the second man in the car crash that killed Denny's donor. One of the two men then crashes, however, leaving only one usable heart, and Burke orders Alex to call UNOS and find out which recipient takes precedence. Callie is annoyed when Meredith questions her about canine bone cancer, and Meredith truthfully tells an anxious Addison that she has not been intimate with Derek since learning of his marriage. Hahn's patient is found to have entered the UNOS system a mere 17 seconds ahead of Denny, and as Izzie panics, Burke calmly decides to reassess Denny's current health stats. Bailey finally confronts the obnoxious Brad, who was Petey's true target, and Derek is taken aback when Kendra's parents ask about keeping her "alive" on machines until her child is born. Izzie comes up with a highly dangerous and illegal plan to make Denny's condition suddenly far worse in order to get him the heart, and though he objects to the theft and the harm to her career, she emotionally pleads with him to accept the plan for her sake, as she has fallen in love with him.

George explains to Callie that he will always side with his "family," namely Meredith, Cristina and Izzie, despite their frustrating actions, and Burke, realizing that Izzie is planning something drastic, decides to head back to Seattle Grace to verify Denny's status in person, further angering Hahn. Addison loses patience with Kendra's parents, accusing them of using her as an "incubator," and she loudly confronts Derek about "using" her while clearly remaining in love with Meredith, noticing too late that half the hospital has heard them. George takes a gentler approach and tells the parents that Kendra would likely want to help others by donating her organs, and Callie, inspired by George, advises Meredith about Doc's condition. Deborah and Neal reunite, much to Cristina's annoyance, and Brad offers some uncharacteristic kindness when Will learns that Kendra is dead. Callie blurts out an "I love you" to George, and Finn sadly agrees that Doc has little time left. Izzie summons a shocked George to guard the door as she prepares to cut Denny's LVAD wire, which will stop his heart and make him eligible for the donor heart, and she nervously assures them both that "Burke will be here any minute" — unaware that Petey has arrived in the parking lot and opened fire again, hitting both Brad and Burke. Includes commercials and promos.
