GREY'S ANATOMY: DAMAGE CASE (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, "scary and damaged" Meredith confides in Izzie about her chaste relationship with Finn, and they are both baffled when Callie wanders in and uses the bathroom right in front of them. At the hospital, a family of four, including pregnant Melanie and her equally chatty Southern parents, are brought in after a car crash caused by Marshall Stone, a surgical intern at Mercy West. Addison drags Alex away from the interesting case as George notices Meredith and Izzie's jokes about Callie, and Burke coldly informs Cristina that she fell asleep in the middle of their amorous on-call room rendezvous that morning. A frustrated Denny demands to go home after collapsing in the hallway, but Burke urges him to "respect the limitations" of his LVAD repair. Melanie takes a rapid turn for the worse and George gently tells her parents of her "catastrophic" injuries, and after a hasty surgery in which she hovers near "the triangle of death" — a combination of hypothermia, acidosis and coagulopathy — the doctors are forced to leave her internal organs exposed to allow her time to stabilize.

After a head CT, a distressed Stone realizes that he simply fell asleep at the wheel after many hours at the hospital, and when Izzie tries to lift Denny's spirits, he angrily protests that she can't understand his sense of loss and limitation caused by his illness. Derek scolds Meredith when Stone evades her watch and watches Melanie's surgery, and Addison, after explaining Melanie's delicate "balancing act" to her parents, orders Alex to continue watching her fetal monitor. George grows yet more uncomfortable as the girls joke about Callie's questionable hygiene, and Melanie's husband Noah, a Seattle native, struggles to accept the idea of possibly losing his young bride and child. Stone begs to apologize to the family, and when Derek snidely notes that Meredith "really gets around" with Finn and others, she finally confronts him about his profound betrayal with Addison, informing him that he cannot judge "how she repairs what he broke."

Melanie's mother Betty nervously weighs in on her condition, and Webber decides to resume the young woman's surgery. With Addison needed elsewhere, Alex is forced to handle Melanie's pregnancy alone, and while he manages to save the baby, Melanie soon dies on the table. Her father chooses to forgive a devastated Stone for the accident, and Izzie decides to support Denny on his own terms. Cristina and Burke avoid the awkward subject of that morning, and Callie informs George that she was deeply embarrassed by the bathroom incident and needs him to stand up for her to his "mean girl" friends. Back at home, Meredith worries that she and Finn are doomed, but he reveals his own "damaged" background to her, assuring her that he's not frightened off by her flaws.
