DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: COULD I LEAVE YOU? (TV)
Summary
One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. Gabrielle and Carlos interview a pregnant woman looking to give up her baby for adoption in the hopes that they can have her child, but Gabrielle is put off by the woman’s unseemly appearance. She manages to persuade Carlos to reject her, and their search for a mother continues. Ron asks Susan about Mike, whose name she called out during her surgery, and she makes up excuses to avoid telling him the truth. He gets her to admit that she remarried her ex-husband to get his health insurance. She wants Ron to come to dinner at her house to meet Karl, claiming that she will divorce him once she’s fully recovered. Bree continues to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, although she declines to give firsthand testimonials like the others. The group leader talks to Bree about her sobriety, and suspects that she may still be drinking. She claims she’s not really an alcoholic, but is only attending meetings to assay Andrew’s attempts to become an emancipated minor, hoping to counter his claim that she is a “dreadful lush.” The group leader, Peter, suspects otherwise and gives Bree his card in case she wants to talk to him. Lynnette attempts to attract a young prospective employee, Veronica, to her advertising firm, and learns that she is the mother of a young boy. She uses the firm’s on-site day care center as a selling point to secure Veronica, and this manages to convince her. Gabrielle and Carlos’s attempts to adopt a child stall when Gabrielle disapproves of the prospective mothers, all of whom she deem ugly. Their lawyer invites one last candidate, Libby Collins, to meet them, and she proves to be physically attractive. She explains that she is a pole-dancer and had to stop performing due to her pregnancy, and that she does not know who the father is. Libby reveals that she is only giving up her baby in the hopes of receiving gifts or financial compensation from Gabrielle and Carlos. Gabrielle tells Bree and Susan about Libby, and Susan takes a moment to get Karl to come to dinner with her and Ron. At work, Lynnette discovers that Veronica breastfeeds her son, who has just turned five and is clearly too old to be receiving breast milk. Andrew consults with his lawyer Mr. Bormanis in his room, as Bree refuses to undo her grounding of him. Mr. Bormanis advises Andrew to convince Bree that it’s in her best interests to let him leave, pointing out that Bree’s immaculate appearance and “presentation” would be a major obstacle for them in court. Matthew asks Betty for money to buy Danielle a birthday present, but she denies him. They soon get into an argument about their situation with Caleb; Matthew wants to get a job but Betty won’t let him, believing that they have to look after Caleb full-time. Matthew asks that Caleb be institutionalized for his own good, but Betty steadfastly refuses, and they break off their argument when Caleb comes downstairs. Soon Lynnette and her co-workers become unnerved by Veronica’s breastfeeding. Her partners convince her to speak to Veronica about it. Libby rejects Gabrielle and Carlos as parents; her stated reason is because of their Mexican ethnicity. Carlos is willing to accept this setback, but Gabrielle is indignant and vows to get Libby’s baby one way or another. Lynnette confronts Veronica, who refuses to stop nursing her son Donovan, believing that the decision to stop should be his. At dinner, Ron and Karl seem to get along swimmingly, but Karl is secretly jealous of Ron. He manages to trick Ron into going across the street to see Mike, and Susan is unable to stop him due to being wheelchair-bound. Ron and Mike introduce themselves to each other, and each realizes who the other is immediately. Ron yells at Susan for her deception, and Mike comes over to help her when she falls out of her wheelchair. The two of them get into a fight until Susan breaks it up; Ron breaks it off with Susan, feeling angry and deceived. Gabrielle visits Libby at the strip club where she works. She explains that she hopes her baby will get adopted by an upper-class white family, but Gabrielle manages to bribe her with gifts of jewelry to give up her baby. She discerns that Libby was never actually racist and was simply holding out for more money. At Lynnette’s office, Donovan approaches her looking for his mother, who is busy with a conference call. Lynnette takes the opportunity to introduce Donovan to chocolate milk, which he takes a liking to instantly. Bree, while out shopping, discovers Andrew in the same store and confronts him, trying to take him home. He threatens to fabricate memories of psychological or sexual abuse at her hands in court if she mentions him sneaking out and stealing her credit card. This spurs Bree to continue her drinking spree, and she eventually passes out in a changing room and gets locked in the department store overnight. When her frantic attempts to escape prove fruitless, she in desperation calls Peter, who gets a security guard to let her out. She talks to him about her encounter with Andrew, and Peter tries to help her realize that she does have a drinking problem. Danielle returns home that night to find Caleb in her room, presenting her a brooch as a birthday present. She becomes unnerved and yells at him to go home, and he quietly leaves. Lynnette finds Veronica crying in her office, explaining that Donovan no longer wants to be nursed. However, Lynnette is somewhat upset when she learns that Veronica was only using the breastfeeding as a means of keeping her weight down. Mike visits Susan to apologize for his fight with Ron. Before she can tell Mike about what set off the entire incident, Ron calls her back, and Susan tells Mike that she doesn’t want to discuss the matter with him. Contrary to her earlier statements, Libby appears to be aware of the identity of her baby’s father, and is in a relationship with him. Includes commercials.
