BRAT CAMP {UNITED STATES VERSION} {EPISODE 3} (TV)
Summary
One in this reality television miniseries based on the British program of the same name about a group of teenagers with behavioral issues sent to a wilderness camp in Oregon for harsh behavioral modification exercises. By day 15, the group is highly on edge and continually resists the influence of the counseling staff. Jada and Frank in particular are argumentative with the staff. The counselors try to reinforce their list of rules the kids agreed to upon arriving in SageWalk, but they violate these rules on a constant basis. For example, while on a trip to refill their water containers Jada and Lauren have a conversation out of earshot of the counselors, violating the “low talking” rule. They and several other kids are planning on trying to escape from SageWalk. The field instructors get wind of this plot and try to tighten their supervision, particularly of Isaiah. Isaiah’s mother comments about his anger issues, which manifest via him hitting his brother and damaging objects. Many of the kids wander further and further away from supervision as the days go by, further distressing the staff. One day Isaiah goes to relieve himself and the counselors lose track of him momentarily; he claims that he couldn’t respond to their calls because he had to throw up. Mountain Wind and Little Bear head back into town to rest and replaced with two new counselors: Shimmering Aspen and Hunting Fire Shaper, a mountaineering expert and “de-escalation” specialist, respectively. The kids do not take well to the staff rotation, and the new staff members call a meeting to try to win over the kids. Frank tries to provoke Fire Shaper by trying to eat a snack outside of designated snack time, and Fire Shaper tries to reason with him. Day 17 begins, and the kids have made very little progress overall. Glacier meets with them and informs them that if they continue with their current progress, none of them will be going home before Christmas. He discusses their individual failings in front of the entire group, much to everyone’s frustration. The kids write letters to their parents back home, and many of their letters end up exaggerating the difficulties they experience at SageWalk. Some even fabricate misfortunes to play on their parents’ sensibilities. The therapists at SageWalk call the kids’ parents weekly, having read the “rescue letters,” and inform them of their child’s individual progress. Jada’s parents are informed that Jada’s drug tests came in; she tested positive for marijuana and cocaine in her bloodstream; they begin to wonder if Jada needs to be put in a different facility for her issues. The SageWalk therapists have individual sessions with each kid, hoping to get them to confront their personal issues. Flying Eagle speaks to Jada about her drug test results, although she claims to have taken the drugs unknowingly. Flying Eagle also meets with Frank about his communication issues, while Mother Raven speaks to Shawn, who says he was diagnosed with situational depression but doesn’t agree with the diagnosis. He talks about the difficulties involved with adjusting to his adoptive parents. Nick’s session with Flying Eagle reveals his vulnerability, he very much wants to go home and feels as though he can’t handle it at SageWalk anymore. Shimmering Aspen wakes the kids up one morning as snow starts to fall, intending to take them on a hike. The kids all voice their extreme dislike for the hike and for the snowfall. The snow hiking exercise is meant to teach the kids self-discipline. They immediately encounter difficulties when their waters supply freezes solid. Shawn’s parents offer commentary, talking about his truancy, his drug usage, and his refusal to listen to them. Shawn reluctantly agrees to help the group with their water supply. However, after the first mile of their hike Shawn starts loudly complaining about carrying too much of the group’s stuff. The kids set a slow pace, partially due to Lexie’s asthma, further frustrating Shawn. Fire Shaper discusses this with Shawn and tries to get him to communicate with the other kids. He tries to get them to set a faster pace and meets with argument from the other kids. This experience gives Shawn some insight into his own problematic relationship with his mother. The counselors believe that Heather and Frank are starting to flirt and vow to put a stop to it, as they feel that any romance inhibits the therapeutic process. Her parents offer commentary, believing that she is directionless and hangs out with bad influences. The kids resume their hike and Fire Shaper talks to Isaiah about his anger issues. The snowstorm escalates into a blizzard, and Derek starts getting physically fatigued, but Shawn tries to convince him that it’s all in his head. When Derek collapses, Frank and Shawn offer to carry some items from his pack for him. Derek collapses again later on; Frank admits that he has grown protective of Derek, as he is younger than the rest of the group. He gives Derek a hand and gets the other kids to stop making fun of him; the counselors hope that this will help Frank deal with his own isolation. The kids near their destination as the blizzard intensifies, and temperatures continue to drop. A mile from their camp, Derek collapses repeatedly. The other kids note that despite his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Derek has great potential and can overcome many of his problems. They band together to help him through the blizzard, and Derek musters up the energy to pick up the pace. They finally reach their destination just after nightfall, exhausted. The counselors are confident that the hike has brought out the better qualities of the kids. Includes commercials.
