ER {E.R.}: SAILING AWAY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, Abby's ex-husband Richard arrives at the hospital and informs her that Maggie is holed up in an Oklahoma motel in a dire state, and both Luka and Carter's new girlfriend Rena are upset when Carter decides to accompany Abby on a hasty mission to retrieve her. The doctors treat a series of inebriated and injured fraternity and sorority hopefuls who have endangered themselves during "pledge week," and Mark thoroughly baby-proofs the house as Corday impatiently awaits her delivery. Carter and Abby fly to Oklahoma – preparing to drive back to Chicago, as Maggie is terrified of plane travel – and find a near-comatose Maggie at the hotel. Abby gently bathes and feeds her mother, but Maggie angrily refuses to leave, forcing Carter to carry her into the car.
Back at the hospital, Benton cares for his former high school science teacher, who showed him unusual kindness during his troublemaking youth, and after a false start, Corday finally gives birth to her daughter, Ella, whom she knows she will be raising on her own after Mark's death. Abby, Carter and Maggie stop at a diner and then at another motel, where Abby sadly watches the fellow guests and expresses envy for their "normal" lives, though Abby reminds her that she can achieve stability by faithfully taking her meds. Rena, sure that Carter has feelings for Abby, eventually breaks up with him over the phone, and Maggie quietly steals from a convenience store as the trio gradually makes their way back to Illinois.
Arriving in Chicago, Abby is startled to find that Maggie isn't rousing from a deep sleep, and Carter whisks her into the hospital, where they find that she has intentionally overdosed on diphenhydramine, a common antihistamine with a sedative agent. At the same time, one of the frat pledges is rushed back into the ER and dies from alcohol poisoning after consuming "35 or 40" shots of tequila, and a furious Benton blames the teen's so-called "big brother" for allowing him to do something so dangerous. With Maggie alive but unconscious, Abby is forced to admit that her mother "will never be OK." Commercials deleted.
