ER {E.R.}: THE VISIT (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, a troubled Kovac struggles to focus as the doctors treat a gang-related injury, and Abby notices when Carter fails to participate in another N.A. meeting. Benton grows annoyed at Malucci's flippant attitude regarding the "gangbanger," and as Greene prepares for a rare vacation with Corday, everyone is confused by the arrival of a cheerful but clearly manic woman, who presents the doctors with breakfast and claims that her daughter works in the E.R. Kovac treats a teenager, Teresa Ruiz, whose suspicious bruising leads him to suspect parental abuse. Jing-Mei talks to an adoption caseworker, who firmly advises her to consult the baby's father, and when Weaver attempts to question the breakfast lady, Maggie Wyczenski, she claims that Abby is her daughter – but Abby denies knowing the woman. Corday treats Al Patterson, an older man who loves surfing, and she offers him a simple outpatient treatment for his herniated disc.
Weaver tries to usher the seemingly delusional Maggie out of the hospital, but Maggie flies into a rage and causes a dramatic scene, forcing Abby to acknowledge her as her mother. Weaver correctly guesses that Maggie, who took the bus up from Florida for her unannounced visit, has untreated bipolar disorder, and as Malucci, Greene and the others treat a preteen with a gunshot wound, Cleo spots Benton's sister Jackie in the waiting room and realizes with horror that the young victim is Benton's nephew, Jesse. Benton rushes into the OR to work on him, while Romano questions Corday about her decision to forgo surgery on Patterson, implying that she chose a quicker procedure to accommodate her travel plans. Abby confides in Carter about her mother, describing Maggie's "fun" highs and extreme lows for which she refuses to consistently take medicine. Cleo updates Jackie, who then furiously ousts Jesse's troublemaking friends from the waiting room, and the police arrive to question Teresa's father about hitting his daughter. Benton and Jackie are devastated when Jesse dies on the table, and Rambo is flustered when Jing-Mei finally tells him about her pregnancy and asks him to sign the adoption consent forms.
Greene complains of a headache as another teen, Vinnie, stops by to check on Teresa, and Abby introduces her mother to Dr. Legaspi, who gently but firmly instructs Maggie to stop taking Prozac and switch to valproic acid, which treats bipolar symptoms more effectively. Maggie is then distressed anew when Abby tries to send her back to Tampa, and when Malucci tries to apologize for assuming Jesse to be "just some banger," he ends up in a violent brawl with a grieving Benton. Kovac questions Teresa, informing her that she's pregnant – but Teresa reveals that the abuse is coming from her boyfriend, Vinnie, not her father. Romano discovers that Patterson is suffering serious complications from Corday's seemingly simple procedure, and Corday, arriving at her vacation spot with Greene, is shocked to receive a grim phone call from work. Cleo and Benton gently prepare Jesse's body for the morgue, and Abby ends up comforting her mother when she finds her tearful and shivering at the bus stop. Commercials deleted.
