SIX FEET UNDER: CAN I COME UP NOW? (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, David receives a late-night call from his former girlfriend, Jennifer, whose father has just been killed by a lightning strike. David then learns that Keith is not out at work, which frustrates him, given Keith's attitude about his own former closeted state. Michaela gives Nate a certain book for David when Barb and Hoyt pick up Maya for a weekend trip, and Anita is upset when Claire makes unfavorable comments about her artwork during a classroom "crit." Ruth and George receive yet another excrement delivery, and Keith's fellow guard Javier makes offensive statements about Celeste's dancers and about her underage female fans. David meets Jennifer's new fiancé, Greg, and as Anita observes that Claire is turning over a new leaf, Russell watches unhappily as she boldly asks out Jimmy. Rico fields another call from Sophia as he works on Jennifer's father, observed by an interested George, and Ruth angrily searches for Arthur's contact information, sure that he is behind the packages.

Lonely with Maya out of town, Nate arrives at Brenda's home and catches her in an intimate moment with Joe. She invites him in, however, and Joe observes that he is "seriously wounded" after hearing him talk about Maya and Lisa. David's resentment mounts as Keith continues pretending to be straight for his co-workers, and Keith later watches without comment as Celeste makes lofty demands while performing at a charity event. Nate encounters an oddly familiar dog while out running and ends up at the home of a psychic, who informs him that "she" is not dead and is "trying to get to him." David is taken aback when Jennifer unleashes her longtime resentment on him, furious that he deceived her and broke her heart by pretending to be straight. George finally admits to a shocked Ruth that the feces packages are being sent by his estranged son Kyle, whom he fathered at a young age, and Joe and Brenda spend time with Margaret and Olivier. Margaret assures Brenda that Joe is "the one," though she mocks her plans to become a shrink, and when Brenda talks fondly of Nate's bond with Maya, Margaret guesses that she herself longs for a child.

Nate tells Claire about the psychic's claim, though she doubts that Lisa could be alive, and her date with Jimmy goes badly when she resists telling him "what she wants." Rico visits Sophia and then returns home late to Vanessa, and George impatiently tells Ruth that he has no interest in bonding with his "very unpleasant" son. Brenda dreams of Nate, and Nate dreams of Lisa, who tells him that "the number three is not important." Rico finally tries to set boundaries with Sophia, and Jennifer and David make peace as she departs after the funeral. Claire tells Edie and Anita about her unsatisfying experiences with Jimmy and with Phil, and Edie offers to give her some tips about increasing her own pleasure. Ruth drags George to the motel where Kyle is living for a reunion, but father and son argue bitterly despite her attempts to be kind. George points out that Kyle's mother's family is wealthy and that he does not need their help, but she remains determined to become involved in his life. Brenda recalls some inappropriate moments from her childhood while in bed with Joe, and David decides to let go of his frustration over Keith's work behavior. Barb is disgusted when Nate tells her about the psychic's claim, and Brenda seems encouraged when Joe declares that he too is starting to feel ready to have children.
