CRIMINAL MINDS: EXTREME AGGRESSOR {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this drama series about a team of "profilers" from the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, all of whom track criminals by anticipating their actions. In this episode, Heather Woodland is abducted in Seattle when she attempts to purchase a secondhand car from a mysterious man. In D.C., B.A.U. Unit Chief Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner debates baby names with his pregnant wife Haley and Supervisory Special Agent Derek Morgan enjoys a night out before hearing the news of the kidnapping. At Quantico, Senior SSA Jason Gideon teaches a group of students about the so-called Footpath Killer, who is still at large, but genius Dr. Spencer Reid arrives and recruits his help for the Seattle case, explaining that the unknown subject, or "unsub," has already kidnapped and killed four women prior to Heather. Heather is shown to be alive in a cage as Gideon studies the evidence and assembles a profile of the killer, though Morgan worries that Gideon is still greatly affected by a traumatic case six months ago in Boston in which several other agents were killed. Gideon visits the unsub's last dump site, guessing that he experienced remorse for the murder, and when they interview Heather's brother David, Reid quickly deduces that she was shopping for a used car online.
Gideon announces that he has completed the profile, which raises Morgan's skepticism, and Gideon that they have likely already met and interviewed the killer. They soon arrest one Richard Slessman with the help of SSA Elle Greenaway, who tells Morgan that she hopes to join B.A.U. soon. Despite the fact that Slessman matches the profile, Gideon is sure that they are still "missing something." As the detectives search Slessman's home and Morgan attempts to break into his heavily-protected computer, Gideon questions the young man, who taunts him about the Boston case and his desperate attempts to save his friends. Slessman hints that Heather is still alive, and Hotch and Gideon realize that the conflicts in the profile suggest a second killer with a more dominant personality. Morgan calls tech analyst Penelope Garcia for help with Slessman's computer, but she tells him that he will have to "get inside his head" to find the password. When the detectives visit the prison at which Slessman was recently held, they determine that one of the guards, Tim Vogel, is likely his partner. Hotch confronts Slessman with the evidence as Gideon and Greenaway pursue Vogel in his car, though they find that he has switched vehicles with a co-worker and is likely headed to Heather's location to kill her.
Morgan and Reid finally break into Slessman's computer by examining his personal effects and find live webcam footage of the caged Heather, whom they determine is being kept on a boat. Slessman gives up the location, and when Gideon catches Vogel with Heather, he uses his profile knowledge to provoke Vogel into shooting at him, at which point Greenaway shoots him dead. Later, Hotch and Morgan agree that Gideon has proved himself ready to re-enter the field, and Gideon shrewdly observes that Hotch was tasked with assembling a report on him at the beginning of the case. Gideon drives through Virginia and stops at a convenience store, and he is stunned to realize that the clerk fits the profile of the Footpath Killer. As he exits the store, the killer prepares to shoot him from behind. Commercials deleted.
