GREY'S ANATOMY: WHO'S ZOOMIN' WHO? {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The first season finale in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, George is deeply embarrassed to learn that he has contracted syphilis, and Burke, still unaware of Cristina's pregnancy and plans to abort, performs tests on his close pal and fraternity brother Bill Adams, whose wife Holly is heavily pregnant. Bailey, Cristina and Izzie treat Jordan Franklin, whose wife Rebecca and unfriendly daughter Alice are unsurprised to learn that he has liver disease caused by excessive drinking, and when Derek notices Webber making repeated mistakes during a surgery, Webber finally admits that he has been having issues with blurry vision. Izzie, amused by George's predicament, points out that he has to alert his new girlfriend, Nurse Olivia, and Burke is amazed to find that, due to a chromosomal abnormality, Bill has an ovary that is pressing on his bladder.

George is annoyed to find that Cristina and Meredith now know his embarrassing secret, though Alex assures him that the rumor will turn him into a "player." Burke assures a bewildered Bill that he's "still a man" and can have the ovary removed without complications, and George's friends give him a life-saving, if not-so-private, dose of penicillin. Meredith receives a call inviting her to the monthly family dinner at her mother's care home, and Webber is frustrated to discover that many members of staff have also been diagnosed with syphilis, presumably due to irresponsible inter-departmental activity. Burke and Cristina confirm that neither one of them requires testing, as they haven't been seeing anyone else, and she and Izzie are shocked when Jordan suddenly dies of cardiac arrest as they conduct a simple procedure on him, though Bailey explains that they did nothing wrong and the family isn't interested in an autopsy. Derek diagnoses Webber with a brain tumor pressing on his optic nerve and assures his chief that he can remove it harmlessly.

Derek and Meredith try to establish the "rules" of their semi-relationship, and during Bill's operation, Burke is upset to learn that his friend is actually sterile, meaning that Holly must have strayed. Izzie and Cristina decide to perform an unauthorized autopsy on Jordan just to be sure that they didn't accidentally "007" him, and Meredith hints that Bailey will be otherwise occupied that evening, though declines to explain about Webber's secret operation. Holly begs Burke to "let it go," though Burke refuses to lie to his patient and friend, and Meredith, having missed the family dinner, is saddened to learn that Ellis is temporarily lucid and has been asking for her. She finally admits the truth of her mother's condition to Derek, and Webber, recovering from surgery in which he was apparently not blinded after all, spots the two sharing a tender moment. Bailey, not fooled by Meredith's awkward lies, is outraged to catch Izzie and Cristina in the midst of their "textbook" – and illegal – autopsy on Jordan, but they all quickly realize that his heart is abnormally large. Meredith assures a stern Webber that Derek is not a "mistake," and Bailey manages to smooth things over with the Franklins by explaining that Jordan had a genetic heart condition for which Alice must now be tested, meaning that Cristina and Izzie's actions might've saved her life. Burke tells Bill the unpleasant truth, and George is enraged to learn that Olivia actually caught the syphilis from her previous boyfriend: Alex. Meredith and Derek happily depart the hospital together – but are then confronted by a glamorous redhead, who introduces herself as Addison Shepherd: Derek's wife. Includes commercials and promos.
