SIX FEET UNDER: THE BLACK FOREST (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Robert Wething dies of alcohol poisoning at a wedding in front of his furious wife Suzanne, and Nate, having recently moved in with Brenda, prepares to head for Idaho to attend a memorial for Lisa, unhappy with the idea of seeing the Kimmels. Ruth continues spending time with Bettina and her daughter, not wanting to return home, and Claire and Jimmy continue their casual relationship. Suzanne plans Robert's funeral, openly stating in front of her children that her husband was a longtime alcoholic, and David suggests to Keith that they should marry as they shop for a friend's wedding, though Keith points out that it is hardly the "perfect time" for them. Vanessa invites Rico to come over and spend time with his sons, and Ruth returns to George and tells him that she has "conditions" for staying with him, including getting to know his estranged children. Nate invites Brenda to come along to Idaho, though she worries about canceling on her bridge-phobic patient Byron.

Edie is annoyed when a stoned Claire resumes flirting with her at a party, and David and Keith attend Terry's wedding as Nate takes Maya to a barbecue at Barb's house and Brenda stays behind at the hotel. Byron soon calls and claims to be ready to jump off a bridge, but then admits that he is lying out of resentment for her leaving town suddenly. Nate's niece Michaela reminds him about the book that she gave him for David, and Barb urges Nate to enjoy some "alone time" while Maya plays with her cousins. Rico is upset to find that Vanessa is going on a date with an old high school friend, Kenny, and David asks a wedding guest about adoption, only to learn that some agencies do not work with gay couples. Brenda refuses to break Byron's confidentiality, but happily tells Nate that they are "really here" for the first time in their relationship. Claire and Russell come up with an interesting new photography idea while hanging out together, and George and his son Kyle unexpectedly bond over dinner as they discuss their grim ideas about nuclear war and other forthcoming disasters. Ruth then finds him surfing environmental-extremist websites late at night and notes that he is starting to obsess about global catastrophe.

David tries to intervene when Suzanne reacts coldly to her daughters' grief for their father, and Nate attends Lisa's memorial and then tells the Kimmels that he and Maya are leaving town, but Barb catches him at a restaurant with Brenda and realizes with displeasure that they are now together. Rico declares that Vanessa dating will "confuse" the boys, but she firmly tells him that they are separated and demands his house key back. Claire flirts with Billy in the darkroom as she processes her new photos, and David has an encounter with a rude man at a restaurant that quickly turns violent. Back in Idaho, funeral director Stan tells the Kimmels that "Lisa's" cremains seem to have been processed with an antiquated method, suggesting that they are not really hers after all.
