SIX FEET UNDER: SOMEONE ELSE'S EYES (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Dwight Garrison is killed by a workman's falling lunch pail, and as Nate and Brenda search for a wedding location, he worries that she is only marrying him out of pity because of his potentially-fatal condition, though she firmly states otherwise. Keith's poor sleeping habits escalate despite Taylor's departure, and Claire is annoyed when Ruth asks her to keep an eye on Nikolai, who is still recuperating from the violent mugging. David is touched when Nate asks him to be his best man, and Garrison's daughters are surprised to hear that their father made his own funeral arrangements ahead of time. Keith finds that Taylor has skipped school to care for her mother's "flu," and at his tough urging, Karla agrees to undergo outpatient treatment for her ongoing addictions. Claire continues chatting with Billy online and ignores Nikolai, and Rico, still bruised from Ramon's attack, is forced to share his lunch with him. Garrison's young widow is outraged to learn that he requested to be buried with his first wife, and she refuses to pay the outstanding balance for the services.

Brenda is offended when Billy too suggests that she is marrying Nate out of some codependent desire to care for him, adding that she has negatively affected his own pathology with her sheltering behavior. He explains that has doctor has advised him to alter their "really toxic" relationship, and the siblings part ways. Nate tells Claire to stay away from Billy, though she argues that his illness is well-maintained, and Billy thanks her for allowing him a "second chance" and asks for her help with a project. Ruth accuses Nikolai of dangerously sloppy bookkeeping at work, while elsewhere David imagines a more idyllic life with Keith as Keith continues initiating sex as a means of comfort. Nate grows exasperated with Garrison's relatives' bickering and angrily orders them to obey the man's final wishes, and Keith tries to comfort Karla, who believes herself to be a bad mother. Nate runs into Lisa, who explains that she took the L.A. job after all, and when he tells her that he and Brenda are engaged, she stuns him by revealing that she is in fact pregnant with his child from their brief affair in Seattle, accusing him of irresponsibility and cowardice. Brenda has a random sexual encounter with a self-help author and then writes about it in her novel, happily telling Melissa that the experience was a rush, though Melissa questions her true feelings about Nate.

Billy asks Claire to take nude portraits of him, including his scar from the "Isabel" tattoo, but she flees when he becomes emotional. A man, Yuri, searches for Nikolai at the flower shop and intimidates Ruth, and Nikolai later admits that his legs were broken by the loan sharks to whom he is deeply in debt. Nathaniel tells a panicked Nate that Brenda is already looking for "a way out" of the engagement and that telling her about Lisa's pregnancy will ensure their breakup, and Keith vents his anger to David, clearly feeling guilty about letting Taylor return to Karla. At the funeral, Garrison's widow apologizes to the brothers, heartbroken that she had only six short years with her husband, though she adds that she intends to buy up the plots around her husband and his first wife out of spite for her stepdaughters. Karla fools Taylor into providing her with clean urine, meaning that she is still using despite Keith's efforts, and David is frustrated by the "mixed messages" when Keith asks him to move in despite appearing uncomfortable with the idea. Claire admits to Nate that she and Billy are "on different wavelengths," but she seems pleased when Billy e-mails her the artful and intimate photos.
