DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: IMPOSSIBLE (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife.

Bree discovers a condom in a batch of laundry and believes that it is evidence of another extramarital affair by Rex. He insists that it isn’t his and they come to the conclusion that it is Andrew’s; Bree is horrified at this and doesn’t want him to engage in sexual activity, but Rex believes that it would be pointless to try to stop him. He convinces her to relent, although she leaves the condom in a conspicuous place in Andrew’s room in order to make a point. Susan tells her friends about Mike’s gunshot wound and they are all suspicious as to the circumstances surrounding it. Susan tries to deflect suspicion away from Mike when the others bring up the possibility that he could have killed Martha. The decision of whether or not to inform the police is left entirely in Susan’s hands, and she decides to do so. Zach goes to see Julie in order to invite her to a pool party and she agrees to try to talk Susan into letting her attend. Gabrielle meets John’s roommate Justin, who offers his services as a gardener free of charge, implying that he also wishes to sleep with her. Gabrielle declines, threatening to send Carlos after him if he persists in his endeavor.

Tom comes home from work, upset that he got passed over for a vice-presidential position. Lynette recommends that he be more assertive in his desire for the job, despite Tom’s belief that his leadership style is “quiet but effective.” Mike arrives to see Susan and ask her out, but several police officers spring from the bushes to arrest Mike. Over the dinner table, Bree makes inquiries to Andrew about his friends, hoping to discover if any of them are his sexual partners. She tries to institute a curfew for him, although Rex points out that such an action is likely to be ineffective. Andrew realizes that Bree’s behavior is because of the condom, and says that the condom is not his, but Danielle’s. Bree decides to talk to Danielle about this; although she has not yet had sex, she plans to do so and doesn’t want to get pregnant. She hopes to do it with John despite their breakup, which was precipitated when she previously refused to have sex with him. Bree advises against pursuing him but Danielle admits that she loves John. Bree tries to get Danielle to embrace abstinence as she did, although Danielle points out that Rex cheated on her and that Bree has been miserable since he moved back in.

Gabrielle confronts Carlos about their bills and their increasingly dire financial situation. She is panicky but Carlos insists that everything will be fine and that she should relax. Gabrielle discovers that Carlos hired Justin as their new gardener. Lynette visits Tom during his company softball game as he constantly makes fun of Tim Dugan, the man who got promoted instead of him. However, Dugan collapses during the game, apparently suffering from some sort of medical problem. Susan forbids Julie from attending Zach’s pool party, fearful that he is “sort of crazy.” A detective arrives investigating Martha’s murder and asks Susan questions about Mike’s whereabouts on the night of Martha’s murder, and Susan claims that she was with him at the time; Julie corroborates her story. Justin comes into Gabrielle’s bedroom to speak with her while Carlos is out. He again tries to make advances on her but she flatly refuses. He tries to kiss her and she slaps and threatens him. He counters by threatening to expose her affair with John if she doesn’t comply with his request.

Mike is released by the police and Susan tells him that she created the alibi which resulted in his release. Bree visits John and asks him not to sleep with Danielle. Tom returns home and reports that Tim survived a triple-bypass heart surgery, but that he will be unable to return to work for several months, leaving to assume the vice presidential position after speaking to his boss about it. However, Lynette is dismayed to learn that his job will entail setting up more remote offices for the company, and that he will be away from home more often. She feels she should have been consulted about the promotion, but Tom feels that he needed to assume the position before he got too old. John tells Bree that the real reason he broke up with Danielle was that he simply didn’t like her very much and that he has “someone else.” Bree advises John to tell Danielle in no uncertain terms that he is not interested in her, specifying that he should be “brutal.” That night, Mike meets with Noah in a diner and they discuss Martha’s murder. Noah believes that there is some conspiracy at work and agrees to use his fortune to deflect police suspicion away from Mike.

Gabrielle goes to see John but is greeted by Justin instead. She intends to confront John about Justin’s blackmail, but he nervously admits that he needed to sleep with her, as he is questioning his own heterosexuality. Lynette brings the kids to visit Tom at the office, and while there she has a conversation with his boss’s wife, who reveals that it was her influence which got Tom the position. Lynette lies to her and feigns enthusiasm for Tom’s new job, although she does mention the great amount of quality time with her family that Tom will miss owing to his busier work schedule. Justin tells Gabrielle that he has acted on his homosexual feelings before, and that lately they have become more important to him. He does not know how to fully cope with his conflicted sexual identity, and explains that he picked Gabrielle so that rumors wouldn’t spread around his school about him. Gabrielle calls him “brave” for making an attempt to overcome his denial about his sexuality, and Justin admits that he never intended to actually reveal her affair with John to Carlos. She kisses him passionately, and when he does not react she concludes that he is telling the truth.

The police ask Susan to accompany them to the station for further questioning, leaving Julie free to attend Zach’s party. At the station, Susan answers inquiries about her interactions with Mike and the gunshot wound he recently sustained. When Susan continues to lie, the detective comes to the conclusion that Susan is protecting Mike because she loves him, and shows him Mike’s criminal record: he has been previously convicted for drug trafficking and manslaughter. Susan is shocked by this revelation. Julie and Danielle arrive at Zach’s party and Danielle immediately goes to speak to John in private. He rejects her advances and it seems to work rather well as Danielle yells at him and runs away. Zach brings Julie aside; he is frustrated by the poor behavior of his party guests. He confides in Julie that he has access to his mother’s handgun and indicates that he could easily kill several of the guests. Julie is unnerved by Zach’s behavior and leaves, encountering a sobbing Danielle on the way out. Julie agrees to take her home and tells Zach she will not be coming back.

Tom tells Lynette that his boss changed his mind and that his promotion has been rescinded. He claims that he is happy with the decision since he was not fond of the increased workload, although Lynette is not sure if she can believe him. Susan finds Mike waiting for her in her driveway when she gets home from the police station. She is angry at him for deceiving her about his past and no longer wants a relationship with him. She goes inside and discovers that Julie is not home, and believes that she is at Zach’s party. She storms into the party in search of her, and finds it virtually empty except for a couple in the pool. She yells at them, believing that one of them is Julie, but it actually turns out to be Justin making out with another boy. Susan slinks off, highly embarrassed. Gabrielle tries to convince Carlos to sell their house, believing that it is not financially feasible for them to live there anymore. He comes around to her way of thinking, particularly her philosophy that “poor is just a state of mind.” Noah helps Mike by bribing one of the detectives on his case. Includes commercials.
