DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: GUILTY (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. In this episode, the Van De Kamps debate the best course of action in the wake of Andrew's hit-and-run on Juanita, and Bree decides that they will get rid of the car in order to keep the secret. Susan and Lynette help to clean up the scene, complaining that the unknown driver should be harshly punished, and at the hospital, Gabrielle is alarmed when John arrives to visit the comatose Juanita. Edie accuses Martha of stealing from her, yet again, and Martha finally declares that her "best friend" must move out. Lynette's acupuncture session is repeatedly interrupted by her children, and she finally confesses her Ritalin habit to the therapist and begs for an herbal sleep aid. Susan and Mike make plans for a romantic getaway, though she is startled to spot a large quantity of cash, as well as a gun, hidden in his home. Rex and Bree abandon the telltale car in a rundown neighborhood, wondering how best to punish Andrew for his actions.

Mr. Shaw, the hitman hired by Paul, demands to know if he is sure about wanting Edie dead for apparently sending the note that prompted Mary Alice's suicide. The Van De Kamps visit the Solises and innocently ask about any leads on the hit-and-run driver, and Gabrielle is startled when Carlos announces that they are planning to have kids soon, despite having agreed to exactly the opposite before marriage. Lynette is forced to counteract the sleep herb with more Ritalin when a horde of Boy Scouts descend on her home for a meeting, and Susan takes advantage of a visiting workman to continue snooping around Mike's home. She falls through the damaged floorboards, however, and ends up stuck there for hours when Bongo proves unhelpful in rescuing her. Gabrielle confronts John about his impromptu hospital visit, and John declares that their affair is over, stating that he feels guilty about cheating on Danielle and indirectly causing Juanita's accident. Gabrielle protests that they are not at fault, but John reveals that he confessed everything to Father Crowley. Bree begins to fear that Andrew is "a monster" when he shows no remorse for the accident, and when Mike finds Susan and realizes that she had been searching through his things before falling, he angrily throws her from the house.

Shaw, posing as a client, prepares to execute Edie, but then discovers that she stole the stationery on which the fateful note was written – from Mrs. Huber. A frazzled Lynette finally snaps and has a vision of Mary Alice, who offers her a gun with which to escape her unhappy life, and Susan tries to question Mike about his many secrets, but he protests that he is "a good guy" and cannot be with someone who mistrusts him. Lynette leaves her kids with Susan and flees, and Gabrielle questions Father Crowley about the exact nature of priestly confidentiality and repentance for one's sins. Lynette confesses her drug use to Bree and Susan, tearfully declaring that she is a bad mother, but her friends comfort her with assurances that they too have felt painfully overwhelmed by parenthood. Paul is shaken to learn of the near-fatal misunderstanding and Shaw offers to kill Martha instead, but Paul opts to confront her himself. Mike visits Susan and tells her to "ask him anything," and the two finally give in to their passion for one another. Paul produces the note and demands answers from Martha, and when Martha states that Mary Alice deserved her punishment for "what she did to that poor baby," Paul ends up murdering her in a rage. Bree and Gabrielle struggle with their respective guilt, but Lynette seems relieved as she has another, more peaceful vision of her late friend. Includes commercials and promos.
