DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: RUNNING TO STAND STILL (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. In this episode, Gabrielle's longtime feud with her mother-in-law continues when Juanita criticizes her for having a maid, though Gabrielle quickly wins Carlos back to her side with some well-timed romance. At a yard sale, Paul sells off several of Mary Alice's belongings as Susan attempts to question him about Zach's whereabouts, and Carlos tries to divine the identity of Gabrielle's theoretical lover. Elsewhere, at the juvenile rehab center, Paul orders the doctors to "skip the Freud" and keep Zach heavily medicated. At a parent meeting, Lynette is annoyed to learn that the kids' school play, "Little Red Riding Hood," has been rewritten to de-villainize the wolf. Gabrielle is frustrated to see "abstinence club" member John spending time with Danielle Van De Kamp, and Susan schemes to tail Paul in Mrs. Greenberg's car. At therapy, Bree coldly shoots down Rex's suggestion of employing a sexual surrogate, and when Gabrielle sneaks out of the girls' poker game for a momentary rendezvous with John, Juanita takes over her spot and quickly cleans the other women out.

Lynette impulsively offers to make the costumes for the play when another mom drops out, and then takes advantage of her "promotion" to rally the others into voting for the wolf's death, annoying ruthless head mom Maisy Gibbons. Bree spots Dr. Goldfine at a restaurant and cajoles him into an impromptu solo session, where she bluntly assures him that she loves sex and is eager for more intimacy with Rex. Gabrielle, having learned from Carlos that his mother is a recovering gambling addict, leaves Juanita at a casino and speeds off to meet up with John, and Maisy threatens to cut Porter and Preston's small roles from the play if Lynette does not finish the many costumes in time. Susan follows Paul to the rehab center and begs Julie to go "undercover" to question Zach, explaining that she is desperate to know the truth about her friend's shocking death. Gabrielle is alarmed to find that Juanita has seriously fallen off the wagon and charged thousands of dollars in gambling debts to Carlos' credit card, and when Bree attempts to seduce Rex at his motel, the moment is ruined when she is distracted by a perilously-placed burrito.

Fellow school mom Jordana advises a frazzled Lynette to use Ritalin as a stimulant to finish her mountain of work, and Juanita is taken aback when Gabrielle offers to help her hide her debts from Carlos. Julie accompanies Susan to the rehab center and sneaks into Zach's room, and he begins to tell her about someone named "Dana" before Julie is kicked out. Bree demands answers from Rex, sure that he wants more from their sex life than he is willing to tell her, but he refuses to divulge his "secret." Lynette gives into temptation and takes her kids' medicine, which allows her to work all through the night, and Juanita, having figured out that Gabrielle intentionally took advantage of her addiction, has an epiphany when she notices her daughter-in-law pointedly ignoring the handsome gardener. A triumphant Lynette finally confronts Maisy, much to the delight of the other mothers, and Susan and Julie wonder who "Dana" might be, unaware that the answer was in front of them at the yard sale: embroidered on a baby blanket.
