BOSTON LEGAL: TRUTH BE TOLD (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, Jack Fleming, a mayoral candidate, comes to the law firm with his wife Samantha and media advisor Roberta, explaining that a harsh political ad from his opponent is full of lies and is hurting his ratings. He asks for help getting it pulled from the air, and Alan seems intrigued, though makes it clear that he is primarily interested in Samantha, whom he knows from college. He tells Tara that he and Samantha had "bad timing," wondering if the same will happen with her. When Paul tells him that representing Jack would be a conflict of interest because the firm is involved with his unpleasant opponent, Snyder, Alan decides to take the case. Denny undergoes a neurological exam, and Lori meets with Richard, who explains that he needs her help in recovering his young son's saved umbilical cord from his ex-wife, as he has multiple myeloma and needs the cord blood in lieu of a marrow donor. Sally struggles with a client, a dimwitted man named Mark who is suing a toaster company because he was burned by the device through his own carelessness. Paul confronts Denny, informing him that he is not billing enough hours and is costing the firm millions, but Denny seems unperturbed.

In court, Snyder's lawyer argues that Jack can air his own ads, but Alan points out that votes will be lost either way because of Snyder's slanderous campaign. The judge agrees that the ads are not required to be fact-checked and refuses to pull the ad, so Roberta opts to put Jack on the news with Samantha to repair his image. Lori and Richard meet with his ex, Marcy, and he again requests to have access to the cord blood, saying that he needs it to save his life. She refuses, however, maintaining that their son may need it in the future. Paul scolds Alan for taking Jack's case against his orders, threatening him with potential dismissal. Tara tells Alan that Jack's ratings have improved, and they continue flirting, noticed by Sally, who then talks to Denny about her toaster case. Lori finds Marcy again and asks about her "secret," and Marcy finally admits that she cheated on Richard and their son is not really his, meaning that the blood will not match, and begs Lori not to tell him. Samantha comes to Alan late at night and reveals that Jack is having an affair with Roberta, upset that she must continue supporting him through the election. Alan tells her that he genuinely was attracted to her in college, describing his fantasy of a night with her at a cheesy tropical-themed motel. The next day, Alan corners Jack before the TV interview and bluntly informs him that Samantha knows about the affair and will be divorcing him after the inauguration, but will stand by him until then if he gives her a hefty settlement and powerful government roles later on, and he is forced to agree.

Paul tells Lori that she must tell Richard the truth, but she instead lies and tells him that the cord blood was accidentally destroyed, promising to help him find another donor. Sally is distressed to see that Denny has intervened with Mark, and later, on election night, Jack is victorious and everyone celebrates, but Samantha decides to bail on him ahead of time and pointedly leaves the party with Alan. Paul confronts Denny again, but Denny smugly reveals that while his neurological results were questionable, he turned Mark's silly lawsuit into a large gain for the firm and is still a forced to be reckoned with. Lori admits to Paul that she lied to Richard, and though he is upset, she urges him to "do the right thing" as well. Elsewhere, Alan spends the night at the tropical motel with a woman, though his bedmate is revealed to be not Samantha, but Tara. Includes commercials and promos.
