WONDERFALLS: TOTEM MOLE {UNAIRED EPISODE} (TV)
Summary
One in this quirky dramedy series, set in Niagara Falls, in which inanimate objects talk to disaffected twenty-something Jaye, setting off a Rube Goldberg-like series of events that culminate in her touching someone's life. In this unaired episode, Jaye goes to Niagara Fall’s Satsuma Indian Reservation with Sharon and Mahandra, who is seeking full tribal citizenship. Though there’s only a trace of Native American ancestry in her family, Mahandra hopes to pay off her student loan via a Satsuma heritage grant. A gas station’s totem figure tells Jaye to “go on in” and indicates a nearby teepee. Inside, an old woman informs Jaye that she’s been chosen for “a great purpose,” adding that she can help her to stop hearing the voices. When accountant Bill Hooton interrupts, he tells Jaye that she’s having a conversation with his dead grandmother, Gentlefeather. Sure enough, Jaye then sees that the woman is in a casket. At an adjacent Satsuma shop, Sharon runs into her old law school nemesis Deanna Littlefoot, and they immediately spar. When Bill protests to Deanna about Jaye’s interaction with Gentlefeather, the totem encourages Jaye to “show him who’s special.” Back at the Wonderfalls shop, Aaron meets with Bill and Jaye, who’s trying to find out if Bill can help her silence the voices. Bill agrees to see if he has “the gift.”
At a ceremony to determine Bill’s abilities, an airborne feather indicates that Jaye is Gentlefeather’s successor. Elsewhere, Sharon represents Mahandra at her tribal certification hearing, and is opposed by Deanna. Ultimately, Deanna ambushes Sharon’s case and gets Mahandra’s request nixed. After coming to believe that he has Gentlefeather’s spirit, Bill stages a protest at Wonderfalls over the Maid of the Mist video and its Native American heroine. Jaye is forced to tell Bill that he’s not “special.” Later, Sharon seeks out Deanna at the gym to get her to change Mahandra’s verdict. When Deanna declines, Sharon locks her in the steam room. Back at Wonderfalls, security officer Wade Jones tries to arrest Bill, who is accidentally shot. When the bullet bounces off him, Bill declares that he’s “the one,” at least till finding out that the bullet was a rubber one. In the steam room, Gentlefeather speaks to Deanna, making her realize that she is the new leader, and Bill is to assist her in money matters on the reservation. Finally, Jaye wonders if she should stop trying to abandon her “gift.”
