NANNY, THE: THE FINALE {PARTS 1 AND 2} (TV)

Summary

The finale in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this two-part episode, Fran worries about her pregnancy weight gain as she nears her first anniversary with Maxwell as well as her due date. Her doctor suggests that exercise might help to induce labor, so she busies herself in planning an anniversary party and packing for California. Yetta and Sylvia arrive with an aerobics video and plenty of snacks, though they opt to observe rather than participate in the exercises. At the party, Fran's father Morty serenades them with "Time After Time" and Maxwell surprises Fran with an airborne message of love. Niles and C.C. share a dance, and Niles proposes to her again, this time with a ring. C.C. flees in shock, and Fran chases her into an elevator to discuss it. The elevator gets stuck, and Fran realizes that she is going into labor, much to C.C.'s horror. As she deals with the painful contractions, Fran assures C.C. that marriage is wonderful, but C.C. wonders how to tell if Niles is "the one." Upstairs, Niles frets about becoming an "old maid," but Maxwell reassures him. When they learn that C.C. and Fran are stuck in the elevator, they hurry to the scene, and Niles is so delighted when C.C. calls to him that she will indeed marry him that he forces the door open and they reunite, causing everyone to momentarily forget about Fran.

Maxwell and the rest of the family rush Fran to the hospital, and she requests pain medication as Sylvia and Yetta tend to her. C.C. feels nauseated, and Niles panics that she is regretting agreeing to marry him. Fran asks Val to be the twins' godmother, and C.C. ignores Fran's labor pains as she worries about her own troubles, saying that planning a wedding is too stressful. She and Niles end up eloping right in Fran's delivery room, and everyone is bewildered when C.C.'s name is finally revealed to be "Chastity Claire." After much effort, Fran finally gives birth to her son Jonah and then her daughter Eve, and everyone comes back in to celebrate with them. The doctor then returns with newlywed C.C.'s test results, and reveals that she herself is pregnant.

Later, Maggie and Brighton head off to Europe together, planning to reunite with the family over the summer in California, and Fran has trouble saying goodbye to her adult children. At home, Grace and Fran care for the babies together, and Fran assures her that she will fit in in Beverly Hills. Fran takes one last look around the house and retrieves the cosmetics case that first brought her to the Sheffield's home, flashing back to "the way they were" and recalling her slowly-budding romance with Maxwell, her bond with the children and all the funny times with the family and Niles and C.C. After retrieving Yetta, Fran leaves the house one final time. The episode closes as the actors are introduced to the live studio audience, and Drescher thanks the fans for their support and love over six years. Commercials deleted.
