NANNY, THE: YETTA'S LETTAS (TV)
Summary
One in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this episode, Maxwell and Fran are shocked to find that C.C. and Niles have finally consummated their relationship. Niles admits nothing, though he affirms that he has reconsidered his resignation. Later, Maxwell tells Fran that his recent play has closed and will not be going to Broadway, again dashing his hopes of beating out Andrew Lloyd Webber. C.C., who is in a disturbingly good mood, tells Maxwell that Webber wants to rent the now-unused theatre from him, but Maxwell refuses, determined to find a new play. Sylvia and Yetta come to visit, bringing along Yetta's old hope chest, and when they discover some love letters to a man other than Joe, her late husband, she admits that she fell in love with someone else on the boat over from Romania, but lost each other at Ellis Island. Maxwell sorts through a number of terrible musicals, including one written by Niles, and Fran excitedly suggests that Yetta's letters could be adapted into a good production, but Maxwell dismisses the idea.
Later, however, he is angry to discover that Fran accidentally sent Yetta's letters to Webber, and he whisked Yetta off to Paris to charm her into signing over the rights to him for a new show. As C.C.'s happiness reaches fairy tale-level, Maxwell points out that Yetta is noticeably senile and that the contract cannot be valid. Sylvia reveals that she has power of attorney, and Maxwell ends up taking her to Paris as well so that she will return the rights of the letters to him instead. Six weeks later, a number of Broadway singers perform a number from Maxwell's new musical about a starcrossed shipboard romance, and the show is deemed a hit, though Yetta feels that the girl in the story is a "schmuck" for choosing the wrong man. Fran suggests that the show would make a good movie, and Sylvia soon meets with Steven Spielberg to discuss just that. Niles then performs a number from his own musical, which tells the story of a beleaguered "six-dollar-an-hour" butler who finally finds love, accompanied by a chorus of Broadway singers.
