EARLY EDITION: LUCK O' THE IRISH {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The series finale in this series of fantasy dramas about a Chicago man, Gary Hobson, who mysteriously receives the following day's newspaper and must decide whether or not to intervene in upcoming events.
In this episode, Gary tries to cut off the ever-growing bar tab of Mr. Quigley, one of McGinty's regulars, though the man warns him that the "Quigley Curse" will befall him if he does. Gary is dismissive, though when he rushes to save the would-be victim of a train accident, he is forced to borrow a dollar from an Irishwoman, Kate O'Rourke, who is then unable to buy a lottery ticket. Back at home, Kate hides from an immigration agent and spends a night on the street. When she sees that the numbers she intended to play were in fact the lotto winners, she bursts into McGinty's and informs Gary that he has ruined her life.
Feeling guilty, he agrees to assist her however he can, but he soon encounters her hot-tempered brother Kieran, who mistakes Gary for her fiancé. Kate goes along with the deception. Kieran changes his mind when he learns that his so-called future brother-in-law owns a pub, and Kate privately explains that she is having a hard time tracking down her real intended, Nigel, a fish scientist. Kieran meets Quigley and then accompanies Gary on his "business"; when he sees Gary save an elderly widow and a priest from death, he declares that he has witnessed a miracle and that he will remain in America until Kate and and the very worthy Gary are wed. An oblivious Quigley breaks the "good news" to Lois over the phone, and Gary is soon shocked to find that Kieran has flown the entire O'Rourke clan from Ireland -- on Gary's dime -- to celebrate the occasion.
Gary and Kate finally track down Nigel, only to find that he is already married to someone else. Kate admits that she may have exaggerated their relationship after falling for him back in Donegal. Lois arrives at Gary's home and expresses her approval of the "shotgun wedding," though Gary hastily sets her straight. Kate finally admits the truth to her family, but Gary then sees that an INS agent will be accidentally killed at the city dump, having been forcibly "detained" by Quigley when he arrives at McGinty's in search of Kate; he rushes off to save the man's life. Kieran, believing that Gary has run out on Kate, chases him to the dump in a city bus, but Kate intervenes and learns that the agent is in fact her childhood sweetheart, Frank Flynn, who has been searching for her for a reunion, not to deport her. Sometime later, Quigley explains to another bar patron that Kate and Frank were eventually married, receiving a winning lottery ticket as an "anonymous" wedding gift, and that he himself has yet to pay his outstanding tab.
