BROOKLYN SOUTH: DEAD MAN SLEEPING (TV)

Summary

One in this series of graphic police dramas set in the 74th Precinct in Brooklyn.

In this episode, Donovan is upset when his father Gene casually reveals that he must have an angioplasty after an earlier heart "incident." At the precinct, Donovan reminds the cops about the somewhat salacious death of their fellow officer, Art Fuller, and Roussakoff tells Doyle that he has been moonlighting at a mortuary in order to buy his mother a car. Several sex workers are arrested during an undercover sting; when Gene stops by the station house, he is unnerved to hear his son referred to as a "rat." Lowery and Valentine share a flirtatious moment, and Valentine questions one of the sex workers, Lorraine Matarazzo, who seems anxious to get into day court. Gene is outraged to hear that his son has been working for Internal Affairs all along, and Santoro scolds Roussakoff for overextending himself when Roussakoff appears tired from his late-night shifts at the funeral home.

Donovan admits to MacElwaine that his father was angered by his IAB work, but MacElwaine urges him to explain the "circumstances" of his choice. Donovan heads to the hospital and reveals that he joined the undercover squad specifically because of Gene's own dishonest dealings during his time on the force, which included accepting bribes and prompted his "early retirement." Valentine observes that Matarazzo appears to be going through withdrawal and also lactating, implying that she recently gave birth, but Matarazzo declines to elaborate. Santoro, feeling guilty over Donovan's pariah status since being forced to admit his IAB work, asks MacElwaine to visit Gene and convince him to let go of his anger toward his son. Valentine and Lowery track down Matarazzo's address and find her infant daughter in peril; Johnson is disturbed when Roussakoff decides to sneak in a short nap – in one of the unattended coffins at the mortuary.

MacElwaine visits Gene and urges him to get "back in the world" with his only son, and disaster strikes when the slumbering Roussakoff is mistaken for the late Fuller and causes a scene when he comes "back to life" during the wake, shocking the distraught widow. Valentine confronts Matarazzo and informs her that her malnourished daughter will survive, but will soon be taken from her because of her neglectful behavior. Lowery and Valentine then agree to ignore their chemistry, knowing that a workplace relationship could prove disastrous. Santoro angrily upbraids Roussakoff for his embarrassing gaffe, and when Donovan return to Gene after his procedure, Gene sadly admits that he regrets his illegal actions and is ashamed that his son must now "clean up after him." Donovan assures his father that he remains proud of him. Back at the station house, MacElwaine formally tells the other cops that Donovan had good reasons for working with IAB and is not a "rat" in a dishonest sense; the others all salute their sergeant, signaling their re-acceptance of him.
