ALIAS: HOURGLASS (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic action series about CIA double agent Sydney Bristow and her adventures with her colleagues and her enemies. In this episode, Jack contacts Irina and asks about the Passenger, but she does not reply and immediately disconnects. In Nepal, Sark tracks down a monk named Conrad and demands information about the Passenger, but Olivia intervenes and captures Conrad. Vaughn tells Sydney and Jack that they were right and his wife is in fact the Covenant mole, frustrated when Jack orders him to play along and act as though nothing is wrong in order to monitor Lauren's actions. He agrees to accompany Lauren to marriage counseling, however, and Dixon tells the team about Conrad's kidnap and sends Sydney and Vaughn to recover him "old school"-style. They catch up with Sark's truck on horseback and attempt to grab him, but Sark shoots Conrad and flees. As he dies, Conrad seems to recognize Sydney and tells her that the Passenger is her "destiny," then revealing that it is not her mother after all – but her sister. A stunned Sydney tells Jack the news, and Jack regretfully admits that Irina had an affair with none other than Sloane. Sloane confesses to Sydney that he found out about the child two years ago and searched desperately for her with Conrad's help, using Omnifam to run widespread DNA tests, but was unsuccessful. He urges Sydney to help exonerate him for her sister's sake.

The team decides to stage a meeting in Lauren's presence in which they discuss the key code needed to read the Rambaldi documents, and Marshall struggles to act "normal" in front of her as he allows her to steal his thumbprint and copy the fake code. Sydney urges Jack to put aside his feelings about Irina and prove Sloane's innocence if he can, but he claims not to have the necessary evidence. Vaughn and Sydney watch as Lauren meets with her handler, who turns out to be Olivia, and Barnett poses as their marriage counselor and suggests that Vaughn accompany Lauren to visit her mother that weekend under the guise of repairing their relationship. Vaughn steals into a locked safe in Olivia's home and scans the documents within, and when Lauren nearly catches him he initiates a romantic moment to cover, overheard by an uncomfortable Sydney and Marshall. They learn of a Rambaldi artifact known as the Hourglass, held at a nightclub/art gallery in Little Tokyo, which will reveal the Passenger's whereabouts – but only to her father, Sloane. Sydney realizes that she must delay or prevent Sloane's execution in order to find her sister, and dupes Jack into admitting that he does, in fact, have evidence about the Trust which will prove Sloane's innocence. However, Jack does not give the information to DOJ Director Bell and instead visits Sloane's cell with a bottle of champagne, mockingly toasting the "birth" of his daughter, as Sloane did Sydney's, and declaring that he will not save him and will exact his revenge on the Passenger.

Sydney and Vaughn head for Little Tokyo and the Hourglass, and Sydney is shocked to hear that Sloane's execution is going ahead as planned at the same time. She and Vaughn aggressively gun down the guards and steal the artifact, while elsewhere Sloane tearfully asks that his daughter be told of his determination to find her and care for her. He is given a lethal injection and dies as Jack, Dixon, Lauren and the others watch. Sydney returns and coldly refuses to hear Jack's explanation, furious at his betrayal and the sacrifice of her half-sister. Lauren happily tells Olivia that Sloane is dead, but Olivia informs her that the key code was false and that Vaughn tricked her. Later, Jack visits Sloane's body in the morgue and revives him with an injection, revealing that he put a chemical in the champagne that counteracted the deadly agent, stating that he saved him only because he "needs him."
