JUDGING AMY: GRAY VS. GRAY (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about Amy Gray, a single mother who moves back home with her mother to take a job as a superior court judge in Hartford, Connecticut. In this episode, Amy and Maxine attempt to find time their busy schedules to chat, deciding to have lunch later that day. Amy presides over a case in which a teenage boy, Taylor, is accused of fatally stabbing another boy, Charlie. Taylor's lawyer states that he has an alibi: he was buying drugs from a homeless man at the time. Though skeptical, Amy agrees to hear the dealer's testimony. Donna feverishly cleans Vincent's apartment and tells him that she is nervous because Oscar's conviction could be overturned and that he may be soon released from jail. Maxine is surprised when she arrives at work and finds that her new supervisor, Potter, is conducting a staff meeting. He tells her that a former client of hers, Joseph, is in the hospital and has listed her as his next of kin. When Donna visits Vincent at work, she encounters Lyle, another columnist, and appears to be immediately attracted to him, though she quickly flees in shock.

Amy learns that her drug dealer witness is in the hospital after a fall and is likely dying, and Taylor's lawyer asks to record his deposition immediately, though Amy rules that they must wait until after his surgery. Maxine calls Amy to cancel their lunch, and they agree to a midnight snack instead. Maxine visits the hospital and learns that Joseph's heart stopped during his splenectomy surgery and that more tests are needed. Detective Jesmer arrives, but Maxine refuses to allow him to question the boy, saying that he needs rest. Taylor's lawyer pleads with Amy again to get the witness' testimony, and she learns that a "very obstinate social worker" is standing in the way and that the witness is only sixteen. Donna admits to Vincent that she had "impure thoughts" about Lyle and wants to confess to Oscar, though he urges her not to. Maxine learns that Joseph has an incurable heart condition and will die soon without a transplant, and when Taylor firmly states that he was definitely with the drug dealer at the time of the murder, Amy decides to head to the hospital to talk to him. Maxine talks to Joseph, who tells her that he would like to enter rehab and turn his life around, unaware of his grim prognosis. Amy arrives at the hospital and realizes that the "obstinate" woman is in fact her mother, and they argue strongly when Amy states that his testimony is essential to freeing Taylor. Maxine counters that the stress could kill him, and Amy is eventually forced to have her arrested.

Donna visits Oscar in jail, and recognizes Vincent, saying that he likes his writing. He then breaks down in tears, however, admitting to Donna that he is not getting out of prison after all. While under oath, Joseph claims that he does not know Taylor and has never sold drugs, and they realize that he is trying not to incriminate himself, unaware that he is dying. Maxine refuses to tell him and take away his "hope," but Amy argues that he is the only one who can save Taylor from an unfair fate. Maxine finally tells Joseph the truth about his condition, and he is devastated to learn that he will soon die. Donna laments that she is "evil" for being attracted to Lyle and other men while Oscar is locked up, but Vincent reassures her that they have a strong and enviable marriage and that she is not at fault. Amy attempts to question Joseph again, but he crashes and dies before he can reply. Maxine, however, states that Joseph made a dying declaration to her confirming Taylor's alibi, and Amy accepts the evidence and dismisses the case against him. Later, Amy and Maxine seem to repair their rift as they meet for their arranged ice-cream date at midnight. Commercials deleted.
