TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {ANN-MARGRET, FREDDIE PRINZE, BOBBY GOLDSBORO, DON HERBERT, MCLEAN STEVENSON} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actress Ann-Margret, comedian Freddie Prinze, singer/songwriter Bobby Goldsboro, actor McLean Stevenson, and "Mr. Wizard" himself, TV host Don Herbert. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: President Ford's uncertainty about sending financial assistance to New York; his "veto-happy" habits; a report that Japan will lead the world in per capita wealth by 1985; the discovery in Iraq of a Neanderthal buried with flowers; and a story about French sex workers' attempts to unionize. Carson then chats with McMahon about the aftermath of a fire at McMahon's home, and then reads out a funny list of bizarre rumors from Washington D.C. for "leak lovers" who enjoy political gossip.

Ann-Margret, currently starring in a show at the Los Angeles Hilton, performs "Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight)", after which she chats with Carson about her plans to appear onstage later that night; a greeting to her mother Anna, present in the audience; her love of tennis, travel and new languages; Swedish vocabulary tips for Carson; her eleven-year marriage to Roger Smith; her new television special "Ann-Margret Smith," set to air on the following night and also starring double-talk master Sid Caesar; and her upcoming film "The Twist" (1976) with Bruce Dern. Clips are shown from the special, including her performances of "Razzle Dazzle," "Thank God I'm a Country Girl" and "Look What Happened to Mabel."

Stevenson then barges in and briefly chats with Carson about his own television special, set to air right before Ann-Margret's (and Dean Martin's later in the evening) and about his love life. Next, Prinze performs a stand-up routine and comments on stereotypes about Puerto Ricans; psychologists for nightmare-plagued dogs; the "blasé" nature of English people; and why certain ethnic groups are uninterested in extra-terrestrial life. He then chats with Carson about his recent wedding to his "homey," plant-loving wife after a speedy courtship; their dispute about household chores; and his failed attempt to ride a motorcycle for the first time for a benefit show alongside Kirk Douglas.

Goldsboro then performs "With Pen in Hand" and talks with Carson about writing a new verse for Vikki Carr's cover of the song; the song's theme of divorce and his own stable, thirteen-year marriage; his "accident-prone" nature and memories of unintentional childhood arson; and a funny story about his former job as a flower deliveryman.

The final guest, Herbert, revealed to be McMahon's neighbor, then takes the stage and demonstrates a few scientifically-themed "magic" tricks, including a stunt with a simple piece of paper and a chemical reaction with a rabbit pellet used as rocket fuel. Includes commercials and promos.
