I'M WITH HER: MEET THE PARENT (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a schoolteacher’s relationship with a famous movie star. Patrick invites Steve along for Thanksgiving dinner at the Four Seasons along with his mother, Alex, and Cheri. Although his mother, Rosalyn, is known for being overly critical, Patrick is not concerned about introducing Alex to her. She arrives and says hello to Patrick; despite her criticisms about his lifestyle, she admits that she is impressed by him dating Alex. Patrick introduces the two of them and they seem to hit it off. However, in private Rosalyn tells Alex to stay away from Patrick, giving her until just after Thanksgiving to break up with him. Alex reports on this development to Cheri; she has not yet told Patrick and is confused about what to do. In an attempt to impress Rosalyn, Alex arranges for a meeting between her and Betty White, of whom Rosalyn claims to be a big fan. However, this gesture fails to leave any impression on Rosalyn. She reveals that she is concerned about Patrick getting mixed up in the “superficial Hollywood world” that she inhabits. In order to convince Rosalyn that she is “not Hollywood,” Alex decides to have their Thanksgiving dinner at home so she can cook for her and show Rosalyn that she’s “down-to-earth.” However, the task of cooking the meal proves to be problematic for Alex. Steve comes along as well, bringing pumpkin pie. Patrick admits that his mom constantly makes him feel guilty about dropping out of law school. The dinner proceeds, and Alex and Cheri awkwardly try to endear Alex to Rosalyn by passing her off as “regular folk.” During the meal, Rosalyn and Steve suddenly become ill and must be rushed to the hospital. The doctor notes they suffered from food poisoning, and Alex believes her turkey is to blame. Finally Alex decides to reveal to Patrick that Rosalyn doesn’t want them together, and Patrick confronts her, stating that he is happy with his life and that he is fed up with trying to please her. He and Alex manage to convince her that he won’t be overshadowed by her, and she seems to accept Alex more readily. Includes commercials.
