GEORGE LOPEZ: DUBYA, DAD AND DATING {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The third season premiere in this comedy series, set in Los Angeles, in which comedian George Lopez plays family man "George Lopez." In this two-part episode, George is thrilled to learn that President Bush will be giving a speech at the factory, though admits that his bosses have instructed him to cut his hair and "look respectable" for the event. Benny admits to Angie that she is secretly dating a slightly younger co-worker, Randy, though has not yet told George, and Carmen takes offense when she learns of the president's visit, declaring that she disapproves of his policies and intends to protest the speech. George reluctantly accompanies Benny to her salon, where his usual barber, Lionel, is now working, and when hairdresser Sylvia reads Benny's tarot cards, she declares that the relationship is doomed if Benny does not come clean with George. Benny hints to him that she is dating, though he forbids her to see anyone from the factory, feeling that it will compromise their jobs.
George, having decided against the haircut, watches proudly as Bush praises the company and its contributions to America, though Randy remains frustrated that he and Benny must continue to hide their relationship. Carmen storms in and loudly criticizes Bush before being hauled out, and an embarrassed George apologizes to the president. Realizing that Bush left his speech on the podium, George decides to steal it as a "souvenir," though Ernie frets that they will get into serious trouble for doing so. At home, George angrily grounds Carmen for a month, though she defiantly states that she "obeyed her conscience," and everyone is shocked when the Secret Service arrives in search of the speech, claiming that taking it is in fact a felony. George assures a worried Angie that no one else knows of his actions – except for the loudmouthed Ernie. Ernie swears that he has not spilled the beans, but a fearful George immediately confesses his crime when the police arrive – though they then arrest him not for taking the speech, but for punching his father Manny during their heated encounter in Phoenix.
Angie panics when George calls her from jail and admits that he might be extradited to Arizona, but Manny then arrives and explains that he pressed charges just so that he could find and talk to George. He admits that he was wrong to leave years ago and asks to be allowed into his son's life, and George struggles with deciding whether or not to forgive him. Back at home, Angie warns him against holding onto unresolved issues, though Carmen feels that he should stand his ground and ignore Manny's belated apologies. At work, George takes advantage of the new tough-guy rumors about him, but Jack reveals that the factory's security camera caught George stealing the speech – and also Randy's private dalliance with "a little guy" – and orders him to give it back (and finally cut his hair) or risk federal charges. Later, despite Benny's furious declarations about Manny, George secretly invites his father to family dinner, having decided to forgive him and rebuild their relationship. At the same time, however, Benny invites Randy to dinner as well, promising that she will finally tell George and the others about their relationship.
George grows nervous when Manny arrives at his home, but he introduces him to Angie and the kids and things go well between them -- until Benny arrives and reacts with outrage to the sight of her wayward ex. She informs them all that Randy is her "lover," and mother and son argue about their choices until they realize that they cannot control one another's lives and will simply have to agree to disagree. The program concludes with an out-of-character Lopez explaining that the speech-stealing story was inspired by his own real-life antics. Includes commercials and promos.
