FRIENDS: THE ONE WHERE NO ONE'S READY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about six Generation-X friends who live together in New York City and share a favorite haunt, a coffee bar called Central Perk. In this "bottle" episode, Ross prepares to give a speech at a benefit at his museum, and is stressed when the others are not ready to leave on time. Joey hunts around in Monica’s fridge and tastes a mysterious beverage, and is repulsed to discover that it is fat. Rachel assures Ross that she simply needs to choose an outfit and will soon be prepared to leave. Phoebe arrives fully dressed, to Ross’ delight. Chandler returns from the bathroom to find Joey in “his” seat, and is vexed when he refuses to move. Monica arrives, also not ready to go, and is distracted from dressing where she hears a phone message from her ex-boyfriend, Richard, unsure whether is it old or new. The others encourage her not to call him back, and Ross pressures her to go get ready. Chandler and Joey continue tussling over the chair, and Joey manages to get hummus on Phoebe’s dress. Rachel offers to help her change, sending Ross into a panic.

Monica admits that she called Richard from her room and left a “casual, breezy” message, but then doubts herself and “beeps in” to Richard’s answering machine to play it for the others. She hears a friendly message from another woman, however, and worries that he is already seeing someone new, but her friends suggest that it is Richard’s adult daughter, Michelle. Finally, after much cajoling from Chandler, Joey gets up—but takes the cushions, which are “the essence of the chair.” In retaliation, Chandler hides Joey’s underwear, and Joey vows to do “the exact opposite” to him. Phoebe reemerges, having solved her hummus problem with an enormous gaudy bow, but Ross lets it go when he realizes his watch has stopped. Rachel frantically asks for shoe advice, but Ross blows up, yelling at her to choose anything available and stop wasting time. Monica calls Michelle and verifies that it was her voice on the tape, but the woman immediately calls her back, leading to an awkward conversation.

Rachel comes out of her room dressed in sweats, coolly informing Ross that she no longer wishes to go to the benefit after he yelled at her. Joey bursts back into the room wearing all of Chandler’s clothes, and in the ensuing argument, Ross declares that neither of them are allowed to come and says that he only cares if Rachel attends and apologizes to her. Joey helpfully suggests that Ross drink some of the fat to atone for his rudeness. Ross agrees, disgusted, but Rachel stops him, touched that he would have done it for her, and everyone finally hurries off to dress. Just before they leave, Monica beeps into Richard’s machine again to erase her first message and record a new one apologizing for the mess, but is horrified when she realizes that she actually altered his outgoing message. Phoebe ushers her out the door as she panics. Rachel appears, beautifully dressed, and Ross is in awe, suddenly forgetting to fret about the time. They depart for the benefit, and while there, Ross talks to an important scientist—who has made the poor choice to sit in Chandler’s seat. Commercials deleted.
