FRIENDS: THE ONE IN BARBADOS {PARTS 1 AND 2} {NINTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about six Generation-X friends who live together in New York City and share a favorite haunt, a coffee bar called Central Perk. In this two-part episode, the friends journey to Barbados for Ross’ paleontology conference, although they are more excited about the beach than the science. Once there, Joey is disturbed to find that Ross, and not he, is the celebrity amongst the guests. Back in New York, Phoebe has an embarrassing moment when she accidentally calls David “Mike.” She tries to brush it off, but confesses to Monica that she can’t stop thinking about her ex-boyfriend. Worried, David asks Chandler for advice, and though Chandler warns him that sarcasm is more his forte, David decides to propose to Phoebe once he learns why she and Mike broke up. When Monica learns what happened, however, she is upset, and explains to a baffled Chandler why it will undoubtedly go wrong.
In Barbados, Joey is distressed to find that is it raining heavily and his beach plans are ruined. Rachel and the others arrive, with Monica having an unfortunate cosmetic reaction to the humid weather. Rachel admits that she is envious of her friends having someone with whom to share the romantic resort. David tells Chandler that he is proposing that night, and Monica tells Phoebe, who decides that she is happy about it, as she knows Mike never wants to marry again.
In Ross’ hotel room, he reads his speech to Charlie, who is greatly impressed. When the other stop by, however, Chandler checks his e-mail and opens a questionable message, infecting Ross’ laptop with a virus and erasing his speech. Ross panics, but Charlie assures him that they can recreate it, and Joey and Rachel quickly leave. They end up sneaking into a pharmaceutical convention by stealing nametags. Elsewhere, Monica calls Mike and tells him the situation with Phoebe and David, imploring him to intervene. Chandler accuses her of meddling, but she protests that she is only trying to “unmeddle” what he “meddled up” in the first place. Ross and Charlie finish his speech and celebrate with champagne. He tells her why his first marriage broke up, and she reveals that she was once engaged to someone who turned out to be gay, and they bond over their bad luck.
Joey and Rachel talk about dating and she admits that she is interested in someone, but won’t say who. At dinner, David prepares to propose to Phoebe, much to large-haired Monica’s horror, but he is interrupted by Mike, who arrives suddenly and tells Phoebe he loves her. He spontaneously proposes, but she says no, saying that she only needed to know that they had a future eventually, not immediately. She admits she still loves him, however, and a defeated David leaves.
The next morning, the girls are thrilled that the sun is out, but Chandler points out that they have to attend Ross’ speech. At the lecture, the friends are rather bored, especially Joey and Rachel, who giggle at the scientific terms. Afterwards, they congratulate him and hurry off to enjoy the island, but discover that it is raining again. Phoebe and Mike suggest going to the game room, but Chandler warns them that Monica’s hyper-competitive nature is a danger. However, Mike and Monica end up in a fierce game of ping-pong, which delights Phoebe and alarms Chandler.
Back in their room, Joey and Charlie try to make plans, but discover that they want to do different things and finally admit that they have nothing in common. Joey goes to see Rachel and tells her that they broke up, and forlornly wonders why he keeps pursuing “the wrong girls,” including Rachel. She suggests that he’s not always wrong, and he eventually figures out that she is interested in him. Despite being as curious “as George” about exploring a relationship, he regretfully turns her down in the interest of his friendship with Ross.
In the lobby, Ross deals with an awkwardly eager fan and is rescued by Charlie, who tells him about the breakup. They are interrupted by their colleagues who intend to throw Ross into the pool, as is tradition, and he and Charlie make a run for it. In the game room, Monica and Mike’s game is still going on, and Chandler begs her to stop, as it has been several hours and her hair is “inexplicable.” She asks him to accept her “sickness,” but soon injures her hand and has to stop playing. Seeing how upset she is, however, Chandler steps in for her and quickly wins the game in a sudden-death round. Monica is delighted to discover his hidden talent, which he kept hidden to avoid having to compete alongside her.
Charlie and Ross hide from the other scientists, and she takes the moment to explain that she had been having feelings for someone else while with Joey and ends up kissing him. He briefly hesitates in the interest of Joey’s feelings, but then decides against it, and Joey spots them. He considers, and then returns to Rachel’s room and embraces her. Commercials deleted.
