HISPANIC HERITAGE AWARDS 2002 (TV)

Summary

This program features the sixteenth annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, presented on September 20, 2002 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and hosted by actor Roselyn Sánchez and actor/singer Carlos Ponce. After the hosts' introductory comments, TV journalist Soledad O'Brien presents the Literature award to Julia Alvarez, whose best-known novel "In the Time of the Butterflies" is based on the lives of the Mirabal sisters, three of whom were murdered in 1960 for their political activism. Minou Tavárez Mirabal, daughter of María Minerva Mirabal, one of the victims, and the surviving sister Bélgica Mirabal Reyes join O'Brien onstage to present Alvarez with the award. Kennedy Center co-chair Andrea Roane briefly comments on the importance of the annual event, and singer Thalía peforms "No Me Enseñaste." Next, actor Maria Canals presents the Sports award to Derek Parra, the "long shot" speed-skater who won the gold medal in the 1500-meter race and the silver in the 5000-meter race at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. A tearful Parra is joined onstage by two "surprise guests," his wife Tiffany and their infant daughter Mia.

Actors Bobby Cannavale and Judy Reyes then introduce the winners of the Youth Award, all of whom will receive grants to aid their continuing education: Linda Moreno, for Sports; Leslie Sanchez, for Science and Technology; Jesse Rodriguez, for Journalism; Karen Sosa, for Academic Excellence; Nancy Fernandez, for Mathematics; and Brandon Garcia, for Leadership. Next, actor Edward James Olmos and singer Jaci Velasquez present the Education award to Father Virgilio Elizando: author, founder of the Mexican-American Cultural Center in San Antonio, and the first Latino to receive the prestigious Notre Dame Laetare Medal. Next, author and journalist Maria Celeste Arrarás and TV host Mario Lopez present the Leadership award to Lisa Quiroz, who rose from a modest background to attend Harvard University and went on to found the Spanish-language version of People magazine.

Finally, fashion model Esther Cañadas presents the Arts award to singer Ricky Martin, who forged a highly-successful solo career after his time in the boy-band Menudo and went on to participate in many philanthropic endeavors. During his speech, Martin is surprised by a visit from a few young friends, three children from Calcutta whom he has sponsored. Singer Juanes closes the evening with a performance of "A Dios Le Pido." Commercials deleted.
