SOUTH PARK: THE MEXICAN STARING FROG OF SOUTHERN SRI LANKA (TV)
Summary
One in this series of animated programs for adults about the town of South Park, which is populated by an oversexed school chef, a psychotic teacher, Jesus Christ, and a group of acerbic, foul-mouthed youngsters. Mr. Garrison assigns his class a paper where they must interview someone in their lives who was in Vietnam. Stan decides to talk to his uncle Jimbo and his friend Ned, who host a television show on South Park's local public access channel. Jimbo recounts his first meeting Ned in Vietnam, but much of his story is clearly fabricated, including elements such as amusement park rides, kung-fu, and the claim that he and Ned singlehandedly defeated the entire Viet Cong army. Not knowing any better, the kids believe Jimbo's story and relay it in their paper. Mr. Garrison believes they simply made up the story to get out of doing their assignment and not only fails them but sends them to detention for arguing with him. Meanwhile, Jesus struggles to maintain ratings for his own television show "Jesus & Pals" against Jimbo and Ned, urged on by his unscrupulous producer. Angry at Jimbo for lying, the kids decide to get back at him by sending in a fake video tape of a cryptid mentioned on Jimbo's show, the "Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka." Supposedly the frog can paralyze or kill someone with nothing but eye contact. Jimbo and Ned believe the tape to be real and profess as much on air; Stan and the others laugh at his uncle's gullibility and send in more tapes of the creature, actually a plastic frog toy. Despite his misgivings, Jesus' show becomes increasingly foul and shocking in order to compete with Jimbo and Ned. Finally Jimbo and Ned vow to hunt down the frog on air; Jesus' producer vows to expose the frog hoax in order to discredit Jimbo and Ned. Stan and the others set up their fake frog and leave an anonymous tip for Jimbo and Ned, prompting them to hunt the creature. In the process of killing the "frog," Ned looks at it and lapses into a coma, requiring hospitalization. The kids arrive at the hospital and reveal that they faked the footage, and that Ned didn't really receive a paralytic stare. However, Jimbo theorizes that the idea of the frog was enough to trigger a psychosomatic coma in Ned. Jesus' producer, listening in, finds the story fascinating and invites all of them to appear on "Jesus & Pals." During the show, she urges Jimbo and the kids to start telling outrageous lies about each other and to start a fight. The studio erupts into chaos until Jesus gets everyone to stop. Stan reveals that the whole thing started with Jimbo's lies about Vietnam and he apologizes for his "embellishments." Jesus also discovers the full extent of his producer's methods. The show's studio audience gets fed up and leaves. Jimbo and Stan apologize to each other for lying. The episode ends as Jesus reveals that he sent his producer to Hell. Commercials deleted.
