Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actor Desi Arnaz, Jr., singer Jaye P. Morgan, singer David Clayton-Thomas and dietitian Dr. Irwin M. Stillman. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the unusually cold California weather; his appreciation of the many Christmas cards sent by viewers and fans; a new law preventing unmarried teenagers from acquiring birth control; the availability of X-rated movies at drive-in theatres; a new study from sex researchers Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson; and the surprising results of the annual "most popular man in the world" survey. Carson and co-host Ed McMahon then discuss McMahon's plans to travel to Colorado for New Year's Eve, and Carson reads out a funny list of "you know you've had too much to drink when…" warning signs. Next, in preparation for the upcoming 84th Rose Bowl, he introduces original footage of the very first game and parade from 1916.
Arnaz Jr. takes the stage and discusses his dislike of gossipy American fan magazines, for which he has never given an interview; his new fantasy music film "Marco" (1973), filmed in Japan, about the life of explorer Marco Polo; his sense that hectic Tokyo is a "paradox" to traditional Japanese culture; the antics of his "Marco" co-star Zero Mostel; his other new film "Billy Two Hats" (1974), a Western shot in Israel and also starring Gregory Peck; and his current engagement to Liza Minnelli.
Next, Morgan performs "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," and then sits down to banter with Carson about her dislike of the "commercialism" of Christmas; her pragmatic gift choices for her family members; her multiple marriages and divorces, similar to Carson's; and her New Year's plans and resolutions, including her determination to quit smoking and grow taller.
Clayton-Thomas then takes the stage and performs "You've Made Me So Very Happy," and then discusses his decision to leave his band Blood, Sweat & Tears for a solo career; a subtle greeting to his grandmother at home; and his recent win at the Rio de Janeiro Song Festival, making him the first American composer to receive the prize. He then performs "Nobody Calls Me Prophet" from his new album "Tequila Sunrise."
The final guest, Stillman, takes the stage and comments on the medical impossibility of Morgan's dream of acquiring more height; having "no time for sunshine" during his recent trip to Miami; the popularity of his latest diet book, particularly with certain unnamed celebrities; the importance of watching one's weight, especially when managing illnesses like diabetes; why one cannot "knead away" one's body fat with a machine; and the importance of drinking alcohol in moderation only.
