MAGNUM, P.I.: DON'T SAY GOODBYE (TV)
Summary
One in this detective series set in Hawaii, starring Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a former naval officer turned private investigator. In this episode, Higgins chastises Magnum for apparently not paying his phone bill and complains that another of his "floozy girlfriends" is trying to contact him, though he is taken aback when the caller turns out to be the elderly Agatha Kimball, a wealthy blind widow known to Magnum. At home, Agatha listens to her granddaughter Amy's piano music, but then suffers a fall on a badly-placed wheelchair ramp. Magnum arrives and meets Amy's new husband Stewart and then greets Agatha, who insists that she is unhurt. She tells Magnum that she received a call from someone demanding $25,000 for "enlightening information" about Amy, and as she only just reconnected with her long-lost granddaughter with Magnum's help, she does not wish to know any sort of negative secret and simply wants him to pay the blackmailer and end the problem. Stewart questions Magnum, suspicious about his romantic past with Amy, and then mentions Agatha's "string of accidents," which Magnum guesses have been caused by someone desiring her fortune.
Magnum heads out to Hanauma Bay to meet the blackmailer, but the man is suddenly shot by persons unknown and Magnum quickly chases the getaway car, but loses it on the road. He heads to a restaurant called Fat Jack's, having noticed the logo on the man's truck, and Fat Jack himself seems unsurprised by news of the man's violent death, saying only that he was named Frank LaRue. He pushes Magnum to go out with his sister, Eunice, hinting that he has more information. Magnum searches LaRue's home and finds a photograph of him with Amy and another woman, and he heads back to Agatha's home to question her. Amy swears that she only met LaRue once and that he dated the other woman, her former co-worker Carol, though Magnum is skeptical. She admits that her "old feelings" for him are resurfacing, and Stewart is angered when he catches them kissing. Magnum quickly leaves and then attempts to persuade Rick to take out Eunice, sure that it will help his case. An annoyed Higgins continues taking messages for Magnum on Masters' line, and Magnum hears that Agatha was mysteriously pushed into her pool. He returns to check on her, though she again brushes off the "accident" and, despite his protests that she is in danger, declares that his job is over now that LaRue is dead.
Magnum then learns that Amy is headed to Maui, where LaRue once lived, and he convinces T.C. to fly him over in his helicopter. Upon arriving at LaRue's former home, he is told that Amy actually died two years previously and used to date LaRue, and he has an epiphany. He finds "Amy" at the cemetery and declares that she is really Carol, and she admits that Amy, her friend and roommate, fell apart after her mother's death and that she herself answered Agatha's letters and eventually "became" Amy. She swears that she genuinely loves the old woman and does not care about her inheritance, and Magnum concludes that Stewart is the one who has been harming Agatha. When they attempt to head back to Oahu, Stewart surprises them on the boat with a gun and reveals that LaRue approached him first with the secret before turning to the far wealthier Agnes. After a fight, Magnum and Amy/Carol jump into the water to escape him, and when he follows, Stewart is run over by a passing boat. Later, Magnum is surprised to find that Rick has secured a date with Eunice's comely sister Denise instead, and Higgins shamefacedly admits that his dogs are to blame for Magnum's telephone problems. With Magnum's encouragement, Amy/Carol finally admits the truth to Agatha, but Agatha explains that she has long since guessed that they were not blood-related, but considers her family nonetheless because of their bond.
