Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part four of twelve in this television adaptation of the Chinese novel, "Mingyun Si Chongzou," (The Four Stages of Life) written by Han Zhijun. It shows the life of one typical family in late 1980 in China.
Part four continues to detail the ongoing problems with in the family led by Maoyuan (Dad).
Part four begins with Dad comforting his third daughter-in-law Zaohua on her marriage troubles and wanting her to bear a grandson to the family, especially his first two grandchildren are both girls. Dad doesn't believe there is anything wrong with his son Tongsuo either, and only worries about Zaohua's willingness to bear children. Next day, Zaohua prays to a child-bearing goddess under Dad’s instructions, and Dads notices the injuries on her neck and back that Tongsuo has inflicted. Dad angrily goes to confront Tongsuo about it, and makes Tongsuo kneel in front of Zaohua as punishment. The rest of the women in the family (first and second daughters-in-law Ma Lian and Qiaogu, and youngest daughter Xiangcao) are all glad that Tongsuo is finally being punished and made to bow to his wife. To celebrate this “historical” event, they drag Zaohua to take baths in a local lake that evening. On their way there, Gousheng's wife, the woman to whom Tongsuo had sold bad bean curds to in part two, complains to Zaohua about her husband’s actions, and Zaohua gives Gousheng's wife some money to cover her loss. Once at the lake, the four women are soon joined by Xique (the fourth son Tiesuo's fiancee), who shows off her swimming skills, which she had learned during her nursing study in the local city. Zaohua leaves the lake first to visit her mother, but she bumps into her ex-lover Xiaogeng first. It turns out Xiaogeng has been doing most of the field work for Zaohua’s mother during evenings and nights like tonight. Unable to pay Xiaogeng back with anything, Zaohua again urges him to forget about her and marry someone else soon. Next Zaohua relates this incident to her mother, who decides to knit Xiaogeng a nice sweater to thank him for all his hard work. Zaohua returns home, where Dad is anxiously waiting for her. Dad asks Zaohua to hand over her marriage certificate to him, Zaohua agrees and promises not to divorce Tongsuo. Next, Dad is hiding the marriage certificate in an old pillowcase, and Qiaogu comes in to turn in her husband’s daily earnings and witnesses the odd activity. When Dad refuses to tell her what he’s hiding, Qiaogu thinks Dad is hiding a big stash of money behind their backs. Qiaogu gets very upset and urges her husband Yinsuo to divide the family again. Part four ends with Yinsuo agreeing with his wife and goes to his father to speak about it.
